The couple at one of waitress Amanda Newkirk's many tables seemed ordinary enough. The woman ordered a turkey burger, fries and two Coors Lights. The man had a bacon cheeseburger and sweet tea.

Their bill came to $26.35. They left Newkirk $1,000.

Newkirk, seven months pregnant and teary with excitement, read the handwritten note on the check: "Keep the change! Have a great day...

My husband and I were in town for a wedding in southern New Mexico recently near an Indian Reservation. We stopped for a quick late-night dinner at a Subway sandwich shop on our way to an Indian Casino. We had $100 in our pocket to "blow" gambling.

The Subway shop was in a dimly-lit gas station/convenience store off the main highway. The two sandwich makers were young, maybe 15 yr old girls, and obviously from the reservation. The eclectic line of people was long (crying babies, old people with canes, punk teenagers) as it was after 11pm on a Saturday night and this was the only place to eat "real food."

The line didn't bother them. The young ladies took the time to carefully make our sandwiches to specifications (my husband has allergies), they were nice, smiled, made eye contact, and treated each customer as if they were their only customer.

We marveled at their professionalism.

My husband left them a $100 tip and we went back to the hotel and enjoyed the best darn subway sandwiches we ever had.
