While virtually nobody had two cells phones five years ago, nearly one in six people (16%) now carry around 2 cell phones according to a new online survey by research firm Compete. While many of these dual phones are because businesses are providing one and not allowing personal calls to be made on it, there is also a trend for individuals to get two cell phones on their own.
According to the survey, 59% use two cell phones to separate personal and business use. Other reasons for dual cell phone use are one for incoming calls, the other for outgoing (6%), one for normal use, the other as a walkie-talkie (6%), one for peak hours, the other for off-peak hours (5%) and one for calling, one for e-mail, Internet and other data (5%) Lower priced cell phone plans also seem to be encouraging people to take on another cell phone. Wireless companies now offer free nights and weekends along with family plans that make it more economical to retain a second phone for personal use than it was a few years ago. Another issue for some is cell phone coverage. Different companies are stronger and offer better coverage in different areas. For those who commute or travel through areas two phones make it easier to get calls through. While cell phones have become less expensive, one should consider if the convenience of a second cell phone is truly worth the price. |

Well, I must admit....I had been on the no need for a cell phone, or at least no need for more than a pre-paid plan before now. Finally, there is a carrier in our area where the reception is outstanding. We will be elminating our landline. We signed up for a family plan. Though it will end up costing us about $40 more a month than our previous set-up....the justifications are endless. I am at home with the little ones all day while my DH works. He isn't able to call home much or for any long amount of time. Now I can share with him the little moments that occur with our little ones--with the camera and audio features of our phones. Also my mom and I can talk without her getting charges minutes. These phones have added a whole new dimension to our lives and our marriage. There is a priceless value added to our lives by paying the extra $40 a month. PLUS....we have eliminated a tom of debt these past two months already and will eliminate much more by the end of this year. So in our particular case, the two phones---not a true "need"---but I am seeing the benefits....
