76% Think They Should Save More Money
With holiday shopping off to a strong start and Americans expected to spend an average of nearly $750 on gifts this season, money will be an issue with many of them. According to a new survey from Bank of America and conducted by Harris Interactive, 76% of U.S. adults don't think they save as much money as they should.
The survey of more than 2,000 U.S. adults found the following information:
- 89% of adults do not have a separate account where they save money for holiday shopping.
- 68% of adults place their spare change in a change jar or piggy bank.
- 82% of adults have a savings account of some type, but less than 64% saved money in the past year.
- 98% of adults regularly take measures to save money. these include:
* making meals at home instead of eating out (76%),
* conserving energy (73%)
* waiting for items to go on sale before purchasing (69%).
- 92% of adults save spare change, but only 66% of them do so specifically as a means of saving money. They typically think they could save just over $100 (median = $103) just by saving their spare change over one year.
- 33% of adults regularly transfer funds from an account into their savings account.
