According to a company funded survey covering the years 1985 through 2004 which was released today, Wal-Mart discount prices have saved consumers $263 billion while creating 210,000 new jobs for the economy. The $263 billion in savings equates to $895 per person. The study was conducted by Global Insight.
The study based its money saving conclusion on the correlation that the 1985 - 2004 period when Wal-Mart was expanding coincided with a decrease in a number of price categories measured in the Consumer Price Index. "Consumers earned less in nominal dollars, but their income bought them more in the economy with Wal-Mart because of real disposable income gains," according to the study. |
