Several Eureka Springs businesses made night deposits at a local bank over the weekend, but the loot made into the hands of two thieves who set up a fake drop in front of the real deposit slot.

Eureka Springs Detective Morris Pate said two men made a phony front that looked, at first glance, like the genuine deposit slot and glued it to the front of the real slot at about 9 p.m. Saturday night.

Then, they waited nearby as at least five people from local businesses made their deposits between Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

During the heist, as each depositor arrived and put their deposits into the fake slot, the thieves would soon come up to the site and take the deposit. They took each deposit every time a customer would drop one off, Pate said.

He explained that the fake front didn't appear to be good in quality, but apparently the customers didn't take a very close look at the slot as they made their deposits. Pate said the box is used mostly by local businesses...
