Question Show New Posts by Default?

Can I change my preferences to see New Posts when I come to this site?

Or can I bookmark the New Posts page?

That would seem useful.

well, not exactly it's a PHP based search, so bookmarking the URL would only return certain new posts the next time you return (i.e., the threads that were returned the first time you searched would still be returned, at least that's been my experience.) maybe we should reqeust a "Show me the new posts!" button from nate to make it a little faster...

How do we do this?

I really like this forum. It is similar in format to another forum I visit daily (on a different topic). On that forum, you can choose to see new posts by default.

another option is if you go to your control panel, select edit options, and about halfway down the page is a section called Default Thread Age Cut Off. basically, you can tell the system to not show you any threads that are older than a day or two. rather than telling the system which posts to show you (i.e. only new posts), you're telling it which ones to not show you (i.e. old threads).

You may specify a time period from which to display threads. Threads older than the age you specify will not be shown.

Use Forum Default
Show threads from last day
Show threads from last 2 days
Show threads from last week
Show threads from last 10 days
Show threads from last 2 weeks
Show threads from last month
Show threads from last 45 days
Show threads from last 2 months
Show threads from last 75 days
Show threads from last 100 days
Show threads from last year

Both of the above suggestions are good solutions.

You can also click "Quick Links" and then right-click on "New Posts" and select:

Bookmark This Link (Firefox)
Add to Favorites (Internet Explorer)

This has the same net effect as autoxer's suggestion.

Thanks. Autoxer's URL says "do=getnew" which probably works every time.

When I choose QuickLinks|NewPosts the URL always ends in "searchid=99..." which I figured changes, so the bookmark might not work.

Great advices. It's a bit embarassing to admit, but I've never thought of using that feature. But I'm going to start using it from now on.

Do not select New Posts. If you simply right-click New Posts and set it as a bookmark. This creates a bookmark that is the proper URL (ending in "getnew".) This can be seen if you right-click it and select Properties or if you just hover over it and look at the status bar of your browser (lower-left corner, typically.)

Actually, I think Tina's suggestion is best for what you want. Then you don't need a special, separate URL for newer posts, you just automatically get them displayed when you log-in to SavingAdvice.

hal, one thing to notice is when you use autoxer's URL that ends with "php?do=getnew" this request gets 'translated' so that what actually shows up in your address bar is "php?do=205487" or something similar. the number is basically an identifier of which search was run for logging purposes.

if you're wanting to have a bookmark that specifically searches just new posts, and doesn't reference the numerical id for a previous search, you may need/want to type it in manually so that it ends in "php?do=getnew"
