Lemons As A Cleaner

1. Apply lemon juice directly to soap scum and hard water deposits. The lemon juice will help dissolve these.

2. Use a bit of lemon juice to clean and shine brass and copper.

3. Mix lemon juice with vinegar and some baking soda to make a good cleaning paste.

4. Cut a lemon in half. Sprinkle baking soda on the cut section. You can then use the half lemon to scrub dishes, clean surfaces and help remove stains.

5. Cut a lemon in half. Sprinkle salt on the cut section. This will clean and make shine the copper bottoms of pots and pans.

6. If you use vinegar as your main cleaner (four cups water and one cup white-wine vinegar), take a few lemon peels and twist them a number of times. Add the peels directly to the vinegar solution and they will help neutralize the harsh smell.

7. Mix olive oil with lemon juice to make a polish for your hardwood furniture.




Lemon Fresheners

1. After squeezing the juice out of lemon slices, don't throw the peel away. Put the peels through the garbage disposal. They will help clean the blades and freshens the drain. You can also use orange peels to do this.

2. Squeeze a few drops of lemon into your vacuum cleaner bag before vacuuming. The air flow will give your entire house a clean, lemon scent.

Lemon Skin Treatments

1. Place a 1 to 1 mixture of lemon juice and olive oil into a small jar. Apply it to your face and hands before going to sleep each night. It will make your skin shinier and healthier looking.

2. Use diluted lemon juice on cotton balls to gently apply on sunburned skin. The juice acts as an astringent which will help relieve the pain.

3. After juicing a lemon, place the remaining half cup over your elbows. It will help moisten dry elbows.

I read to get the most juice out of a lemon, you have to microwave it first for 15 seconds.

When you're done with the juice and still have the peeling left, unless you've grated that for zest.............dice up little 1/4" squares and dry them. Store in an air tight container and use one or two in a cup of tea. Delightful.
Makes a fun gift to give to a tea drinker on your list too.

If you are dieting, use the juice of a quarter lemon on your salad instead of dressing. Savings: over 200 calories. Takes a bit getting used to, but once you do it is clean and refreshing!

Thanks for the great ideas on lemons. Cheap. Also you mention vinegar. I never buy household cleaners, I use vinegar. Vinegar makes a great hair rinse and stops the itchy scalp. Can we do a vinegar story?

thanks for the article... very handy as we are going through a couple lemons a week making hummus and lemon water... we usually just toss the squeezed rind into a glass of water but now we have other things to try... very cool...
for getting more juice, i heard put it in hot water for a bit and then roll it around...
I've seen my mom keep half a squeezed lemon on the ledge by the sink and use it on her hands right after washing dishes... i think mostly on her nails (she used to work in a beauty salon)... i like all the other uses too... i know a penny mentioned using it for a salad dressing, my mom makes a great chicken salad with lemon juice and some salt and pepper using boiled chicken... and then uses the chicken stock for other stuff....
i also appreciate the mention of zest... i always forget about that... guess i need some work on my frugalness huh?

I sometimes used lemon leftovers to toss in the water tank on the toilet to save on buying tablets. Works surprizingly well, and lasts a week.

You can use some lemons drops for the small amount of water to make your hair shinny.

A lot of ways to use the lemon for a natural deodorizing of our homes
instead of those chemically fake things.

I have used the furniture polish. It gives a beautiful sheen to the
wood and is pleasant to use. I also will use canola oil and substitute
some cider vinegar (I stir in a bowl equal amounts) if I do not have
any olive oil or lemons.

I nuke my lemons for ten seconds to make more juice come out, like the rolling method but faster.

I also love them and use them in everything, and I use the zest to make lemon salt for poultry and meat rubs. You just put some of the zest into a small amount of kosher, or table salt, let it sit for a few days, and voilà! Lemon salt. You can also add spices or herb to it at the same time.
