Something Weird Via Snooping

Hello everyone,

One of the friends in our church is a broker with edward jones. she is always dropping hints that i can make a buttload in the stock market (yeah! without her help).

but, today she said to me "yeah, you closed your JP morgan chase account"? I said "how did you know that"? she said "oh, you would laugh if i told you" i said "tell me". she said "noooo" and brushed it off. how the hell did she know that?

Did you mention it on a social networking site like facebook or perhaps tweet some friends?

She would not have mentioned it in such an off-hand way if she had used deceitful/illegal means to acquire the info. If she had, she would have just used the information as an impetus to start hard selling you on RJ knowing that you were in transition. Or, maybe that's just what I would have done

I work at a bank and the only way other than you writing that somewhere as the other post mentioned would be by talking to someone at Chase, maybe a friend she has. Chase would track who looks at your account so you could talk to them if you want to pursue it further. I'd be pissed!

This is my thought, as well. I can't think of any legal way she would know the status of your account at another institution.

I would ask her again and tell her that if she doesn't reveal how she came by that information, you are going to file a complaint with the SEC.

She either:

A) She is incredible at reading people and paying attention to detail. she may have picked up on something you said or did or some way that you acted and was able to put together that you closed your account.

B) She is doing something illegal.

I'd be concerned and would definitely confront her to find out exactly what is going on. You may want to pull your credit report to make sure nothing illegal is going on.

I have not mentioned this to anyone, including tweets or facebook. Yeah, real weird. I am going to check my credit report.

I totally agree with you on the creep factor. Why on earth would she say that to you if she REALLY wanted your business? CREEPY!

That said, I do not agree with the others. I am sure that information is readily available to anyone willing to purchase it. I get the feeling the average person thinks that kind of information is far more private than it really is. I am not surprised a big brokerage house would have that data readily accessible, personally. I mean hell, you can run a $50 background check on someone and find out a hell of a lot of information. (I mentioned this post to my husband who is in marketing, and he told me "you can buy any information you want," from a marketing standpoint).

Here is some good info - pull your free chexsystems report - probably where the info came from. I don't gather there is anything illegal about a brokerage firm buying this information for marketing purposes (much like credit card companies and banks can check your credit reports for marketing purposes).

Banks pull chex systems to see if any money is owed to other banks, as well as to see if they consistently overdraft... It does not show if they closed an account unless the other bank closed it due to it being in collections, at least to my knowledge and I pull it every day.

The lady is a creep and is doing hw on you.

Agree with MonkeyMama that marketers do know a lot about us and others, eg insurance companies.

Has anyone heard of the FTC complaint by privacy advocates that Facebook follows you on your computer to track where you go (might have already been posted). At first the advice was to just log out. Now it is if you even view someones page and are not a FB person you still get a tracker. Yahoo also tracks.

But that is no the only one. If you go to various websites you could have a 'supercookie' put on to track you.

Insurance companies are getting in the act by letting info collecting agencies follow you where you look up medical info. Supposedly Wikipedia does not allow this but if you want to look up medical things on Mirriam Webster online dictionary there is a tracking cookie that notes what you are researching.

I run my McAffee and it picks out supercookies, but they go right back on once I get on the computer.

Some people have elaborate stealth search mode programs they follow.

I think this person just got hold of (purchased?)info or in the alternative took a peek at the records (which I agree - complain about that). I would complain regardless and maybe she would fess up how she knows this about you.

Edward Jones... that says it all and it doesn't surprise me. I left that company because my FA was suggesting only things that would make her a huge commission. I also used to work for the home office and there are some horrible people walking around there. Buyer beware.

She doesn't sound very bright. If she was going to find out information that she has no need or no right knowing, then telling the "victim" about it is foolish.
