Default Market drops- what did you do?

Days like today (market dropped 4% today after 1% yesterday) test your risk tolerance... did anyone out there buy today? Do you plan to go shopping with stocks on sale?

I am buying in tommorrow and middle of next week (when cash comes in from payday).

Anyone else buying?

I'd be buying if I had money and an account available to do so. I've been wanting to open a Roth somewhere and am wishing I'd have already opened it so I could begin buying in times like these. =]

Depends on what you want. If buying long term and holding, you could buy tomorrow. If looking to buy-and-sell relatively short term, I wouldn't buy tomorrow. I don't think the correction is over IMO.

I am going in a little bit, $100 for a MF in my roth IRA, and wait to see what is happening next several days, if it keep going down, I will put some more...

I remember the other day somebody asked about investing in China, now you can see the risk we were talking about in China's market, far worse than the US market, one day down 9%, SCARY!

I dollar cost average so my answer is:

Nothing. I invest on the 10th of every month.

Except I did do this:

Even my silver ETF dropped - that spoiled my diversfication theory by owning a commodity. That should have stayed put or gone up. Coulda, woulda, shoulda.

Shows you what I know, LOL.

Well on the bright side, Silver was up 10% since last month, and now back down 5%. What are you going to do - it was the only part of my portfolio that gained enough so the loss was less than the gain.

Cool Re: Market drops- what did you do?

I missed out.

I remember when the dow dropped like 500 points one day back in the late 90s and my mommy called to ask what I did. I took it as a buying opportunity.

I just bought PID last week. A few hours ago I was working on tallying my portfolio -- I won't shop until I know what I have.

I've had this year's retirement contribution in a money market and CDs (about 15k). I don't usually try to time the market as it just doesn't work, but really didn't trust how high the market was......so I just hanged on for a while. Pretty glad I did. I'll be transferring part if it into index funds this week. It's very long term hold strategy. I guess I just lucked out a bit.

Same here. I invest in my Roth with each paycheck. I invest in 2 taxable fund accounts monthly - one on the 10th and one on the 25th.

I sold my Chinese and Latin American investments. I don't think the correction is over, but I am holding onto the rest of my stocks and will be looking to buy more tomorrow.

I was a small buyer today on a stock that opened about $4.50 lower and ended down .65 but have been a net seller for the month. My cash holdings raised about 5%. I started to take some profits last week in my uranium and metals stocks just because they got too hot too fast.

I'm not doing anything. I'll most likely be buying small amounts this coming payday, smaller than usual only because of impending unemployment. I need to beef up my emergency fund at least a little.

We haven't done anything, but I have a little bit of money set aside to invest in mutual funds, with about $3k more on the way (tax refund)...wondering if I should jump in soon rather than wait for the rest of the cash to get here. Anyway, after I get this initial investment, I hope to start contributing regularly and not worry about the timing so much! We are in it for the long haul...

I've just heard that the Shanghai market opens down 1.3%, so I'll be buying in small amounts over the next few days. I've already committed my extra paycheck during march to my IRA in addition to the dca plan, doubling it when market is down won't hurt

What can I say, I like bear market, even if the trend is still going down.

Beside, market timing may not work for short term investment, but it works very well for long term holding, especially where indexing is concerned, and I intend to hold for a very long time.

why yes, technically i did live through black monday

granted, i lived in the mountains of SC at the time, in a house with a wood stove and a spring-fed well 100 yards away from the house, so i and my family didn't really notice all that much.

oh, and i was 9...
