I came to this site because it seems like I can get the right advice. I've been trying to sell a timeshare for my parents, where they hold a deed for one week of the property. I thought "put it on ebay and fagetabowdit!" But it turns out its a little more complicated; the timeshare market is not so hot for sellers. I talked with the timeshare mgmt. about selling and they provided me with an agency that has gone a whole year now with no results. So I'm dumping the agent and going the DIY route. Is there anyone who has managed to sell a timeshare on their own? How's it done?

Selling a timeshare is very difficult; it is even hard to just give them away. I have heard of some people that have donated them to a church or something.

Hello and welcome!
If you go the partner site Personal Finance Advice, there is a recent post (6 or so entries ago) about timeshares with some helpful links. Unfortunately, sometimes you can't even give them away. Good luck! |

The market is not so hot because timeshares are junk! Timeshares would probably be more attractive if they weren't saddled with such rigid contracts. Your parents could end up paying fees even after you sell it! Avoid that and go with Timeshare Relief. You end up paying, but it's money well spent because it gets your parents out of the contract for good.

Also check the TUG site (Timeshare User's Group) at http://www.tug2.net/.
Let this serve as a warning to anyone considering a timeshare purchase. With the possible exception of Disney's Vacation Club, timeshares are NOT investments. They are very expensive, relatively inflexible ways to prepay your vacations. Just think of it this way. If they were such good deals, they wouldn't need to pay people hundreds of dollars and give away all kinds of goodies to get people to come hear the sales talks.

We have one and the maintenance fees get higher and higher every year, plus they can add on assessments and yes you pay property taxes as well. We have really enjoyed ours. I don't know where we could go with the kind of emenities and the size of timeshare that we have and can trade for the amount of money paid yearly. But, if you want to exchange for another place - that is where it is getting expensive. Last year we paid $150. for an exchange. I don't regret buying it because we've had it since 1987 and it's a great meeting place for our sons and their wives.
