long term stocks
Hey just wondering if any of you had any thoughts on stocks that would be good to hold over the long term maybe 5-10 years. I am thinking, MO JNJ and GE. Anyone else have any and can back them up.

I would be afraid of MO. That is a cigarette company, right? I know they own other things but I think they are spinning off Kraft!

Yes Altria is a cigarette company and yes they are spinning off Kraft, but I don't there's any reason to be afraid of them. If you don't mind holding shares in a cigarette stock, it's a great perfomer and should continue to be.

Very good stocks. A couple of others that are good in those industries also would be FDX and YUM.

Re: long term stocks
If you want a long term stock look for steady earnings growth. Unfortunately, almost every megacap American company that has any decent future earnings growth potential is priced to perfection IMO right now. The only stock I think exhibits a decent value and has great future growth potential is COP given their 20% in Lukoil who has the 2nd largest oil reserves in the World but has only 1/5 the revenue of XOM. I know Warren Buffett owns a bunch of it and has been buying it on weakness.

This listing was chosen from 'The Smart Investor's Survival Guide' by Charles B. Carlson (2002) and are from his 1500 listings in his "Easy-Hold" listing. I just picked out the ones I thought many of you would recognize. I listed them here for informational purposes and this is not intended as investment advice. ENTER AT **YOUR** OWN RISK. I merely wanted to show that you can invest in things that you know and understand for the long term.
The ones marked w/the * are among ones that I own. There are some others on this list I'm studying w/an eye towards investing when the time is right, the money's in place, and the moon & the tide coincide and my trigger finger feels itchy!

Re: long term stocks
I would say if you have 5-10 years, you could get into NYX (New York Stock Exchange) They are positioning themselves to be the first ever global exchange.
I also think Pepsi (PEP) and General Mills (GIS) would be good plays and consistent (although slower) growers.
I would also look at:
Capital One Financial (COF) or Goldman Sachs (GS) in the financial sector.
Google (GOOG) or Apple (AAPL) in Technology
Conoco (COP) , Chevron (CVX) or Halliburton (HAL) in energy
Lowes (LOW) in retail
Genentech (DNA) or Amgen (AMGN) in Biotech/Pharma
Toyota (TM) in Automotive
Main thing with individual stocks is to stay diversified.

How about utilities? And maybe some blue-chip international companies with high dividends too: using your finance Website of choice, investigate the major holdings of the exchange-traded fund PID, PowerShares International Dividend Achievers.

I've had my eye on COP. I just have to get off my butt and do more than watch it

Re: long term stocks
Thanks guys thats a lot of good information and some great stock picks, as of now I am heavy into REITS, and Utilities but fixing to cut my REITs in half and use that money to diversify a little more.
Here is another question about buying within a ROTH. If I wanted to buy PHK, which is a mutual fund, would I buy it just like I would a regular stock; and will the online broker reinvest the div back into the mutual fund just like they would a regular stock? I have never bought a mutual fund online before, I usually just send in the start up cost and then add to it every month, but I really like the holdings of PHK and the div. Thanks.
