I hope someone here who has experience with capital gains/losses can help me with a tax question. I own(ed) some shares of a privately held company. The company was acquired in 2006 by another company, and all stockholders were given a payout when they surrendered their shares. The company didn't have my current address, and so I wasn't notified of any of the activity. As a result, I'm still waiting on the paperwork, and will surrender my shares and get my payout (a measly $314, yippee) in 2007. I will have a capital loss that will be useful to offset some other gains. My question is, do I claim it on my 2006 taxes since that is when the acquisition occurred, or on my 2007 taxes since that is when I will surrender my shares and receive money? Do you have any favorite websites for researching this kind of thing?

My hunch is it needs to go on your 2006 taxes because that's the year that the taxable event took place. But I would check with the company and find out how they're reporting it to the IRS.
