Yes, other terms here are EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer) and bank wires. Bank wires are instant money transfers (costing $15+ to initiate) and ACH transfers are "virtual checks" (free or small charge to initiate) both are EFT's. The Check 21 (?) system allows banks to process the physical checks you write electronically too.

Yeah, I remember reading about how clearing houses work and all that. Thank you all for being so informative and helping me out at every turn.

Go easy on PW, she's doing a great job Actually I'm kinda surprised that it actually went up with what they're going through. Not complaining though

what they're going through? are you kidding? Dad just gave them a billion to clean up their little "take advantage of people who don't know any better" mortgage operation.

Ahem... I missed nothing. The change happened after I reviewed rates that morning. So there.

And, PW (aka poundwise) is not a she. Just FYI.

Thanks for the heads-up and the compliments.

Default FNBO Direct

I just opened an online savings account with FNBO Direct largely based on the positive feedback I read on Getting Green's website, the 4-star rating on bankrate.com, and the 5.25% APY. The sign up process was easy. They appear to have good customer service although they incorrectly told me there was no atm fee. To clarify, there is a $2.50 fee for any atm use including atm's within the bank's network. However, they do allow "3 external linked accounts" and not just 1 as previously mentioned. I'll post an update on this account in the near future when I get a chance to use some of their online features.

Great! It's always good to get first-hand feedback.

No surprise here, but just received an email that HSBC will in fact return to 5.05% after the promotion ends at the end of the month.
