According to an email that I just received, it appears HSBC Direct is paying 6.0% APY on new deposits thru 04/30/07.

Re: Summary post of online MMA rates
Monday, January 29
I've updated the GMAC rate (again) from 5.10% APY to 5.00% APY
And I'll add the news about the special offer from HSBC to their listing
I reviewed all the other links today and found no other rate changes

GMAC isn't the only one. Citibank dropped its E-Savings to 4.75%.

Thanks for the heads-up. I made that change today.
Something I noted: Citibank just dropped from 5.00 to 4.75 but Capital One just raised their rate from 4.80 to 5.00.
Also, my "good grief" reference for GMAC doesn't have to do with the lower rate, just the fact that they change their rate much more often than anyone else. In fact, I wouldn't bet against a new GMAC rate being posted over the next 10-14 days. They don't make major moves but seem to love to tweak it constantly.

Re: Summary post of online MMA rates
Poundwise - You do a lot of great work to keep this valuable featured info up to date. Would you consider doing a monthly post with a graph of the rates of the top five MMAs for the prior 4 weeks? It would be useful to see which are consistent in their inconsistency. Just a thought.

First of all, thanks!
I can do that. I've been tracking it closely since the last quarter of last year.
Look for a first installment (chart) later in the month.

Wow, that's great! I just arbitrarily picked tracking 5 funds over a month. If you've been tracking more or fewer and over some other time period, run with what you have. This will be very helpful for a lot of people, so thanks!

Take a look at page one of this thread for the list.
My recommendation, at the present time, is for Amboy Direct. They have no minimum balance requirements, no fees, and pay 5.25% APY. Their site is plain-jane but functional and transfers are easy.
As you are new to the arena, you might want to opt for Emigrant Direct or HSBC instead. They pay 5.05% APY and each have a nicer site interface and some additional features.
These are not the only good options, however, based on all considerations and the fact that you are just getting started with an online savings account, these are solid choices.
