what is the best short term investment if short term was a 1-2 year span

With that short of a term, I would eliminate all risk and use a high yield savings account. Otherwise you might be forced to sell when something is down, just to access your money.

Define "best"?

If you mean "the safest", my vote is for CDs.

If you mean "the most aggressive money maker", my vote is with international or penny stocks.

If you mean "best use of money in the short-term", my vote is with either IRA or paying down debt, especially CCs.

If you have high risk tolerance, I would take stab in options or futures market. I think they are mostly gamble but chances of returns (and losses) are highest of any "short term investment".

Me personally I would use an ING or other high interest online bank.

Return is all about risk. Right now I would be taking advantage of this stock market pullback in selected energy stocks as I really don't see the fundamentals changing in the sector over that time frame.

The best short-term investment may be CDs, but the best long-term investment is stock funds.
