I just saw that the metal content in both the penny and nickle exceeds its worth.

I read that as well... particularly the nickel. But the article I read made a point that the cost of melting down the coins would outweigh any extra value in the metal.

and there you have it. The coins also remain circulating and generaly don't wear out.
