Some simple ways to get free organic fertilizer for your garden:

And anyone who seriously does this, probably already knows, but I might as well add my two cents anyways. Lots of household waste can be added to a compost pile in addition to the leaves and plant trimmings from your yard. Most food remnants with the exception of meat scraps work fine. Add a worm or two and it will make fast work of the decomposing too.
The wood shavings was an excellent idea though, I have tons of those and never thought about it, I am definitely going to try that this year! |

word of caution to all: only use sawdust or wood shavings if there are no cats roaming your neighborhood. cats like to use sawdust and shavings as a litter, and cat waste is not 'helpful' when it comes to fertilizing plants. in fact, the ammonia content can burn some species.

Oh dear! Thanks for the caution on the wood shavings. I do seem to have a neighborhood cat that I see tracks from every now and then. Keep your cat in your own yard! UGH! Sorry, I used to own a cat and she went out on a leash so she didn't go out of my yard. I have been thinking of ways to deal with this cat for some time now as she (or he) torments my dog as the dog goes out (on a leash) tries to chase the cat out of her yard, and gets choked as she reaches the end of her leash. I have been contemplating a fence for the backyard so the dogs can just go out and romp and play all they want. But, it would have to be a privacy fence, or I think the cat would just walk through the slats to get in.

I've had them dig under, climb over, jump over, squeeze thru.... Also, don't let anyone tell you can'ts wont cross a line of garlic. I've had cats who will EAT the garlic. But, most cats hate water. So, if you can catch it in the act and aim straight with the hose--the cat may get the idea. (or it will just wait till your not home) |

The cat has been chased out of our yard, I think he has tried the hose a time or two. But like right now in the deep snow, I see tracks in the front yard (where the dogs don't go) so I know it is still around when we aren't seeing it.

I think its because they have 9 lives...I mean, if they already have lived a few of them, then they already have several lifetimes of experience under their fur.......
Back to the subject of fertalizer....I listed our cow and horse manure, with a mixure of broken down hay on craigs list for $25 a pickup load. I have 2 people interested already. Would I let them have it for free? Only if it were family or close friends. Why? Because, for me to gather it with the backhoe takes my time and fuel. If they (some city slicker) were to get in the pasture and gather it and get kicked by a horse, or stepped on by a cow, I would be responsible. I don't think I am ripping them off by selling it, because a small bag of it at Walmart si $8. I will give (and load it with the cat) a pickup load for $25. All natural and organic. Our animals are not on steriods, nor has our yard or pasture been sprayed with anything. |

Another idea for gardening --- our dump makes compost out of trees and other yard waste brought in.
