My late hubby was a diabetic and eventually was on insulin. While I have access to free/cheap sharps containers as I am a microbiologist, I was appalled at the cost of them at the pharmacy($10 each back in 2002-3).
I contacted our local health dept and asked about the requirements for disposal of lancets & insulin syringes. I was tols, "any heavy duty, screw cap container (laundry detergent, fabric softner....) was acceptable to put in regular trash.
Also, be aware that the needle is the ONLY part that needs to be specially handled. The syringe portion itself is safe for regular trash. I did separate the syringes/barrels and dispose separately to eliminate/reduce issues.
