Default Thermos cookery

does anyone do this?
does it really work & save money?

taken from SAVING MONEY WITH A THERMOS BOTTLE by Kurt Saxon
thermos cookery in camping saves on wood, weight of food carried
& no food odors to alert bears or enemies - also an advantage to
anyone living where cooking is not allowed = no cooking odors

1st the thermos - there are 3 kinds but only one is practical = Aladdin Stanley
It is lined with stainless steel, well insulated, will keep steaming hot for up to
24 hours, holds a quart & is unbreakable, with a lifetime warranty
It costs $22.00 at Wal-Mart or can be ordered through any sporting goods store
It will save you its price in a few days
If you have a family, you might need 2-3

A great factor in thermos cooking is the saving in the cost of energy.
Where it would take about 2 hours to cook whole-grain wheat or nearly
an hour to cook brown rice, thermos cookery takes only 5 minutes to cook
anything so it's possible to save as much in energy as you spend on the food

what you need:
thermos
heat source
one quart saucepan
funnel to quickly pour the pan's contents into the thermos
(To make the funnel, cut off the bottom 4 inches from a gallon plastic milk container)
spoon or fork to help the last of the food into the funnel

preparation:
fill the thermos with water up to the point reached by the stopper
empty the water into the saucepan
make a scratch or other indelible mark at the water's surface inside the saucepan
so you'll put just enough water in the saucepan, as too much
will leave food out & too little will give you less cooking water

(sample meals -breakfast wheat)
you can purchase 2 lbs wheat from a local health food dtore for about $ .80
this will make 8 meals at 10 cents each
in the evening place 4 ounces wheat in the saucepan
with a 1/2 teaspoon salt (prevents flatness)
fil to the water mark with with hottest tap water you have
bring contents to a rolling boil, stirring all the while -takes about 5 minutes
quickly, but carefully, swirl & pour the contents into the funnel
help any lagging matter from the pan to the funnel & into the thermos
Cap firmly but not tightly
shake & lay the thermos on its side, to keep the contents even
Next morning open the thermos & pour its contents into the saucepan
put milk & sweetener on it or margarine, salt and pepper, etc
With 4 ounces of dry wheat, you now have at least 3/4 pound of cooked wheat
& about a pint of vitamin & mineral enriched water

(sample meal - lunch or supper)
prepare a few ounces of hamburger or other meat chopped finely,
plus chopped potatoes & other vegetables the night before
After breakfast, put these & the water to the marked line in the
saucepan & prepare as usual
At lunchtime you will have a quart of really delicious stew.
Since nothing leaves the thermos in cooking, as contrasted to the flavor
leaving stew cooking on the stove, you'll have better tasting, higher
vitamin content of thermos stew.

Interesting. I've never heard of this before.
