Smile what was the value of the food that you discarded this week?

i just flash cleaned out my fridge for the end of the week... i threw out the following:
1/2 baked sweet potato
1/2 baked butternut squash
was gonna use both of these in muffins.. ran out of time.

1 ripened cantaloupe

1/2 container of calzone sauce

3 cups of crockpot chili

i gave away $20 worth of cookies, candies, etc. to neice... we are just not eating junk food and these were left over from stockpile buying in march.

i would say i discarded over $26 total worth of food, throw away and give away.

and on the other hand, i probably froze 6 meals on friday from other foods i had cooked...

i really need to make smaller quantities.

Oh, that's too bad about the food.

i don't need to throw stuff away on a weekly basis, tho i actually write down here at work if i need to eat something for dinner to avoid it going bad. For insttance, tonight, i have to have a salad, and cut up the ripened cantaloupe.

Mostly what I throw out is bread and milk. I buy the smallest milk around, and sometimes we don't even open it before it expires. I do put the bread out for the critters, so something is eating it.

This week was a good week, no food waste other than the usual carrot tops, eggshells, etc. that go in the compost.

That's what inspired my challenge...the average American throws out 400 pounds of food each year! It's hardest in the summer, though, all that fresh produce and not enough freezer space!

As I am in the middle of cleaning my pantry and food storage areas.
So far I found a few things that have been too long in the pantry and I am not happy to eat it.

Leggo's tomato puree 400g $1.00
Mandarins segments 200g $1.35
Sweet potatoes $1.00

$3.35 is not bad. When you think what it would cost if it made me sick!

One serving of oatmeal, so maybe 10 or 20 cents. A good week.

The only thing I throw out is milk and bread. I throw the bread in the yard for the critters.

Anytime I throw bread out to the birds...
...my big fat dog gobbles it up before it hits the ground!

Not so great week: my cottage cheese tub tupperware isn't as good as salsa tub tupperware because it's not see-through!

Tossed a small tub of rice with vveggies, an eggplant, and one chopped carrot (though I rescued other things).

So maybe a total of $1.50 to $2.50.
