1, 2, and 3. I am just a frugal person. I like to make a dollar stretch. I figure that we have to work hard to make a dollar come in and I am going to make it work hard to go out.

Re: How did you get to be so frugal?
Well definately #1 out of necessity.

All four have applied to me at some point in my life. Right now I am frugal because I've done it so long that I like it! So I guess it is a challenge.
I could go to the mall and buy a new "fill in the blank" for $100, but I'd rather stop at the Salvation Army and purchase the same thing "gently used' and maybe get a pretty sheet to make new curtains while I'm there! |

My penny-pinching ways developed for 3 reasons:
1. out of necessity (probably the biggest reason.) 2. because that's the way I was raised, and it's part of my temperament/nature (well... I wouldn't really call my parents frugal, but we didn't have a lot of money and had to do without a lot of goodies that others took for granted. It definitely is part of my temperament though.) 3. because I enjoy the challenge (most definitely! It is super-rewarding to find an item you need for cheaper!) |

I think most of these are part of it. My parents were poor and I observed them to some extent. I grew up thinking for instance that it was wrong to waste and to take care of what I have. It was also a necessity as it was many years before we (my dh & I) had much money and we had 4 children to provide for. I also like the challenge!

1 and 4 I moved into my own apartment for my last year of college (while attending full time), and money was TIGHT! (Rent, Utilities, Internet, Car expenses) and I didn't ask for any assistance from my parents despite living 25 minutes from them. It was tough at times! But I did it. It also proved to be good practice for when I moved this past July to a new state! With higher living expenses. I'm much better with spending money now than I was at the beginning of college, living on campus, and receiving support from my parents in addition to the money I earned from working. |
