How much do you make? What is your house worth?
This may be a bit cheeky, because I know how taboo it is to talk about your finances with others. Some people think it is rude to ask, "how much do you make?' or "How much did you pay for your house?" I got this idea when I was reading the thread comparing the prices of 1975 with today. I was curious how I compare with others in the world.
If you are interested in responding please answer these questions:
- Where do you live?: New Zealand
- How old are you?: 42
- How much do you make? : $59,000 (teacher)
- How much is your house worth?: $200,000

Thanks for your input

Re: How much do you make? What is your house worth?
Boy you do ask the personal questions, don't you? LOL My dh and I are retired so perhaps it is not as relevant but here it is:
Where do you live?: NW US
How old are you?: 62
How much do you make? : $57240 (this is net - don't know gross off top of my head)
How much is your house worth?: Good question, I'd like to know...I'd estimate in $160,000-220,000 range.

Re: How much do you make? What is your house worth?
I just did some quick math and worked out the average for the 9 people that gave their information.
Salary: $48,160
House Value: $158,000(excluding the people that rent)
When I began this thread I thought that my wages and the value of our house might be below average. I am surprised to see that my wages and the house value is above average.

Re: How much do you make? What is your house worth?
I am suprised about the home values on here where I am in IA the nicest house maybe worth 200,000 thiers not many that come even close to that in price but housing is not going up very much around here at all. I guess we are lucky though. I cant imagine paying more than what we did for a house.

Re: How much do you make? What is your house worth?
Where do you live?: Central Ohio
How old are you?: 41
How much do you make? : Hubby 50,000 (Supervisor of Locomotives small RR) me sporadic but minimal, I run the farm /ebay/sell veggies(now ask me how much I THINK I should make!)
How much is your house worth?: House the bank and insurance claim it's worth 160,000, personally wouldn't give more than 80,000 for it, but the whole farm is worth approx 500,000-600,000 at the moment, more if subdivided.
What amazes me is the prices of just homes and townhomes (275,000? YIKES!) I know I about choked when my MIL paid 239,000 for a condo when we paid 225,000 for our origional 48 acres with 4 barns and shop! We've since added an additional 36 acres to it
I do have to say though that we got VERY lucky purchasing our farm, it was at auction and there was a moto cross next door, we had no problem with it at all but no one else wanted to live with it. Since we bought it the Citiots living across the road got the moto cross shut down and our property values sky rocketed. (citiots= city idiots that move out of town and then complain about the noise/dust/smells/animals etc that FEED THEM!)
One other question that wasn't ask that would be interesting is what property taxes people pay, we're in CAUV (ag tax) district and taxes are just over 1,100 a year for us.

I'd keep in mind this is only certain areas of the US - I would LOVE to find a house that cheap where I live. For townhouses I am looking at $350k price tags. This gives you an idea on how high the prices rise in Jersey (same for California, NY, etc.)
Also, although what I make I consider to be very good, I am technically the low end of the spectrum in the business world. (in my area) $75k + is normal. It has to be, with the prices!

Re: How much do you make? What is your house worth?
karnic -
May I ask what part of NJ you are in? I am out of NJ 4 years now, but go there often. (Was there this past weekend.) I'd love to move back for family, but I feel like I've been priced out!
My brother pays more than $15,000 in property taxes in Monmouth County!
OUCH.

Re: How much do you make? What is your house worth?
I'm 28, SO is 42.
Gross income (3 part time jobs between the two of us): about 65K
House: bought in 2004 for 70K, 20K worth of renovation, now probably worth about 100K, maybe a little less. Owe 52K on it. Needs a lot more work, but afraid to put more money into it cause neighborhood is modest and I'm afraid we won't get our money out.
I'm struck (but not surprised) by the fact that most of us feel like we're "barely making it". I feel that way all the time, and yet we earn way more than the average family in the US.
