Default Do you still shop around, given the high gas prices?

Do you guys still shop around for the best deals?

I am thinking about doing that, but the gas prices make it cost prohibitative.

Not really. Out here in Seattle, the Arco/BP stations have the cheapest gas as a general rule. If you are in a large metro area, you can check out Gas Buddy and/or GPW before you set out.

And remember, if you keep a grocery price book, you can track gas with it just as well. Then your buying strategy changes a bit. If you see a low price no matter where you are or how low your tank is, buy some.

I just want to find a station with gas...I'll pay extra because I have to be able to get around.

I always try to shop around, especially on the web. It isn't so easy for retail products but quite straight forward for service products such as finance and utilities.

We shop around but we figure a bit of gas into the price, if we have to drive out there, so we get milk at the one store when we are there to avoid haivng to go to two stores in one week. It is about a 60cent difference, so $1.80 for the three gallons, I figure we would spend about that on gas to go 20 minutes back and forth to the cheaper spot. (plus if we went we would gauranteed buy something else besides the milk we need!)

We keep an eye out as we are out and about and my dh knows the stations that typically have the lower prices and tries to keep track of them at least.

We only have SuperWalmart and 2 big grocery stores here. I usually buy the bulk of my groceries at SuperWalmart as the prices are the cheapest except for meat. I can't afford their meat at all! All 3 are within a mile of each other as are all of our gas stations except for the one near my home which is usually the cheapest priced and the last to raise their price. Going into the next largest city is definitely out of the question now even though they do have Costco and Sams and other discount stores that we don't have here. By the time we pay for gas and buy food for one meal (can't resist Arby's) we wouldn't save anything.

I keep a price book and look at the Sunday paper and all other sale flyers that come in our mail. If the prices are good, I map out a route and keep a detailed list of what I need. That way I know whether or not the deals are good ones and I stick to the list - usually. But then I know if the splurges are deals too or not.

we live in a fairly small town too, so its not too far to chase down the deals. I usually can make one tank of gas last for an entire month.
