My DH has been diagnosed with High Blood pressure. He needs to lose weight and make some lifestyle changes. I think he's going to need help doing this as he's never been successful with it in the past.
I was thinking of sending him to Healthy Performance. Has anyone had any experience with them. I'm very concerned about the cost factor, as we don't have money to throw around, but I have to find a way to help him lose the weight. Any feedback? Thanks! Jean |

I am a registered nurse who is working on a master's in adult health, so I know about this topic. If you care to have more information I would be happy to provide you with the inforamtion. Is there a way to post our email confidentially to each other? I don't want to post to all, but I would be happy to help you. Hypertension is serious and leads to other ill health effects. How is the blood sugar??? Diet and lifestyle changes are the first treatment. How is the weight? All sodium should be cut out of the diet - fresh foods only!!!! Exercise is the best method. First line treatment for medications is a diuretic (water pill). What is his reading, how many times, and time of day. There is something we call "white coat hypertencion" - blood pressure only elevated in the doctor' office. To have hypertension it must be three readings greater than 140/90. Is it properly diagnosed??? Please encourage your significant other to take this seriously. You and your family love him and we cannot fix everything (death is permanent). Is this good for a beginning? I'll be happy to send you literature (this is research) on the topic.

my husband also has high blood pressure but his is not attributed to weight, he is 6'6 and weighs maybe 180. He eats waaaay too much salt but cannot convince him to cut down so he is on medication and will be forever probably. I no longer cook with salt cuz he adds way to much anyways, he doesn't seem to add more than before when I added it. I personally don't like a lot of salt so doesn't bother me. You can try to get him to change his lifestyle but unless he wants to you won't be able to. Trust me, I live it every day. It is so frustrating. I forgot to add he is only 29

Pennywise: My DH is probably willing to change some things about his lifestyle, other things, I don't know...
He'd LOVE to be able to exercise more as he realizes it makes him feel better, etc. There's very limited time for it, though. He works from 6:30 a.m. until almost 4:00 when he comes home and takes care of our young children so I can go to work. I get home about 10:00 p.m. or 10:30 and by them, he's exhausted. He usually only gets about 5 hours of sleep a night, because he wants to touch base with me before he falls into bed. The $600 I bring home a month keeps our heads above water, so I can't quit. Believe me, I would if I could. Last night, when I got home from work, he looked exhausted. He forced himself to go use the eliptical machine instead of going to sleep, as he really is concerned. He's tried to lose weight, watching what he eats, etc. on quite a few occasions. He doesn't seem to have any success with actually losing any, though. He may drop 3 or 4 lbs, and then they come right back on. He holds water terribly! He's aware of this, but unsure what to do about it. I would say he has about 40 lbs to lose. His blood pressure has been tested many times over, it's not a "white coat" problem. He was 170 / 94 at his office the other day (he works at a medical facility so he's been having it tested at work several times a week). We should be able to post private messages to each other, I'll have to look into this. Thanks for any help! Jean |
