Default Your opinion is needed on a beverage name.

hi all, so if you can, i'd love to get your feedback on something. it actually pertains to finance for me, really it DOES, but the rub is that i'd rather explain HOW after getting some results in from you all. what would be MOST helpful for me is if you could look at these 5 beer names, and envision yourself either ordering at a bar, or purchasing a bottled beer at a retailer. i'd like to know based on name alone:

1-which one you would be MOST likely to order
2-which one you would be LEAST likely to order

thanks so much, i'll explain more after (hopefully) some results come in!

Ace of Spades Ale
Hoof Hearted Ale
Wanderlust Ale
Black Market Ale
Energia Ale

I wouldn't order any of them as I don't drink beer/ale but I voted based on name alone. I think a couple are harder to remember or say (won't say which as to not influence others). I think 2 of them were pretty equal in my mind.

I love a good micro brew. I voted based on name, cause I'm a Motorhead fan.

I'd most likely go for either one of the last two. I'd least likely order the second, I'm sure you know the reason.

Another thought is to which sex are you targeting? What sounds appealing to a guy most likely will not be appealing to most women. I remember seeing a beer called "Fat Bast---" (you know the name). Even if I loved the taste (I'm not a beer drinker at all), I would feel very self-conscious ordering it or buying it in a store.

I think the names sound a bit interesting. I like the "Wanderlust" one, although I do not drink ale myself.

Honestly, none of the names really appeal to me at all, but the ones I disliked the most (and rather intensely) were the Hoof Hearted one and the Energia one.

I like "Black Market Ale". Has a dodgy, back-alley quality to it - which might actually appeal to the type of demographic (like me!) that drinks microbrews. "Ace of Spades" isn't bad either...

OK, thanks folks. this feedback is great. so here's the nature of the poll:

2 friends of mine have been home brewing beer for about 5 years now, and are planning on starting a brewery. there is the potential for me to come in as a partner/investor. the business plan looks solid, and they are together people, but they have chosen a name (Hoof Hearted) for the brewery that concerns me. marketing and branding is a big part of the business i run, so i think i've got insight into potential assets and liabilities of various branding choices. but i dont work in the food industry, so i'm trying to gauge how much of a liability the name would be as an entry barrier. especially if my money is on the line, i think it's important to take an honest look at the ramifications of such a name.

so, in a bizarre way, you guys are helping me in a financial decision here! thanks much.

EDIT: i forgot to mention, this poll was generated by myself alone. they are not officially considering other names yet.

This certainly isn't a scientific poll and 12 votes is not a good representative sampling but I would certainly show them this thread seeing as their chosen name got ZERO votes.

I don't personally care for the name, but if it will be used, it should at least be spelled correctly: Hoof-Hearted

I think it wouldn't be fair to say a name doesn't at least somewhat influence your decision.

"Weasel Pee-Pee" for instance. . .I wouldn't order that unless I was with my old college buddies for kind of a joke (I think there is a small market with beers of those kind of hilarious names).

So, based on the poll, I may order "Wanderlust" or "Black Market"

EDIT: After deciding, I just read DS's last response. . .I have to agree. My reason for not ordering "Hoof-Hearted" - it's too cutesy or something. Like is it for "Horse Lovers?" When I think of horse lovers, I think of slender framed women who liked ponies and princesses when they were little and put little hearts on their "i's" and drew rainbows, not like men who watch football, hockey, and drink beer. Why do horse lovers drink beer? Why do I want to swallow something that has to do with the bottoms of horse feet?

Just give me another microbrew if I am in the mood is what i would tell the bar wench.

I never actually answered this question.

1. Most likely: Black Market
2. Least likely: Hoof-Hearted

Think of Norm and Cliff Claven as your market. . .okay, a little more sophisticated than that with microbrews.

But not much.

DisneySteve and Frazier have a glass of Bordeaux or some brandy while I'm sitting with Norm and Cliff at the bar.

Nah. I'd probably be doing shots with Carla.

I didn't get the hoof hearted reference at first but after a little googling, I can see why a couple of guys would get together with their buddies and laugh about the name... I don't, however, think 1) that most people are going to get the reference right away and 2) that it's going to draw interest or customers. The name should be catchy or creative, not an inside joke.

LOL. I did the same. Funny, but a really stupid name for a beer.

I'm a bit late to the table here, but I enjoy beer so I will weigh in even if it might be too late.

I seldom make a beer selection based on a name. Usually I go off recommendations, beer descriptions, if it is local, if it is something I haven't tried before. Only if the name is something I find really obnoxious wil I decide not to try the beer. Very seldom do I try a beer because the name gabs my attention and then I usually try it only if the description sounds like so ethingi would like or not or if the bartender has good things to say.

I didn't care for the name energia or hoof hearted. I don't know what hh means, and I don't like energy drinks.

The other 3 sounded ok for me, I wonder if I haven't seen an ace of spades somewhere.it reminds me of another beer.

Good luck with yr venture
