Default Are you still buying bottled water?

There is an article in Consumer's magazine explaining 49% of bottled water is actually tap water. You are safer and kinder to the environment and your $$$ by inexpensively filtering your own tap water and using a #2, #4 or #5 plastic bottle.

The one time use water bottles are filling up landfills with all the plastic and wrapping .

When I moved to my current home, I bought a water filtration system that makes distilled water. I have been making my own clean water for about 15 years now.

I buy about one case (less than $4.00 at Costco) per year and refill them at home because I like the light weight. But you're right that it's a complete waste for people to use them once and then throw them away because they're very expensive and are needlessly filling our landfills.

I will admit to rarely buying a bottle of water at a convenience store (which is ridiculously expensive), but it's only for an emergency when I'm away from home, am really thirsty, and have consumed all the water I brought with me. It happens maybe once every year-and-a-half or two.

I actually buy bottled water all the time.

It's much easier on me to throw a couple bottles in the fridge, and pull one out than to constantly fill up a nalgene bottle with water. And getting 24+ for $3 isn't too bad for the convenience.

I also have a pur filter pitcher that I use while I'm at home. Bottles are great for sports or to take to work with a lunch.

We buy a case a year or so, and like most folks, I very very occasionally buy one if I'm on the road and thirsty without a cup. But not very often.

Most of the time we use our Brita filter. We have 2 1 gallon and 1 2 gallon containers that we fill up and keep refrigerated (the big one and one of the smaller ones go in a backup fridge) and fill our 32 ounce glass or aluminum water bottles from those. I will get bottled water on the rare occasions that we buy a combo from a fast food place and the price of the drink is part of the combo because we don't drink soda with corn syrup. We also bought a case to take with us on vacation when we went as it was easier to throw those in the ice chest, but we also took our 2 gallon container to refill them with when we ran out.

Default All the time

As a long distance truck driver, I buy bottled water all the time. Saving and refilling the bottles is not practical and it's healthier than buying the pop/soda I also buy.

I use both bottled water and filtered (britta). Britta is used for coffee and cooking. The main reason I purchase bottled water is the taste. I can tell the difference between filtered and bottled water.

I used to buy a about 3 cases of talking rain per month from Costco now I make my own sparkling water at home using Seattle tap water. We keep tap water in the fridge and I usually keep 3 or 4 bottles of my sparkling water (sometimes mixed with some grapefruit juice) which I take to work.

We buy the bottled water for the convenience. Our area has recycling pickup twice a month so our bottles do not end up in the landfil.

Brita + nalgene. Anything else is a rarity.

I only buy them once or twice a year in the summer to take with me when walking at the park, etc. They are a convenience and a luxury, in my opinion.

surprised it is that low a percentage.

my grandfather would kick my ass if I ever bought bottled water instead of drinking from the tap/well.

I've never bought bottled water. We drink tap water. When we are traveling, we use a refillable bottle. We just got back from 2 weeks in Florida and we drank gallons of water while there, all from our refillable bottle. We would freeze it overnight about 1/3 full to have a solid block of ice on the bottom then stuff it with ice cubes in the morning and add as much water as would fit (it is a 32oz bottle). As the day went on, the ice would melt. We would add water and ice as needed (get free ice from restaurants when we had lunch and dinner). It baffles my mind that so many people happily plop down $2.50 for a 20oz bottle and do so several times each day for each family member. They must spend a small fortune just on water while we spend absolutely nothing.

At home, we have a 5-gallon water cooler but we refill the bottle with tap water. We don't buy bottled water for it.

I believe selling bottled water is the biggest marketing rip off ever.

I never bought bottled water in the first place. Tap water’s always been fine for me.

I prefer the taste of bottle water, and actually have preferred brands as well. Some say there's no difference, but I taste one. Plus, if I drink bottled water, I will actually drink it and keep track of how much I have drank per day. With a refillable bottle or glass, etc...I wouldn't drink it. No clue why...I just forget to. But with the bottle, I can see that there is some left and something clicks in my brain that I am supposed to drink "this much".

Luckily my company provides us free bottled water, and my night job buys me a bottle every time I work as well. Between the 2, I do buy my own, but not as much as I drink by any means.

I do try to keep a few empty bottles around my apartment, and will fill those with tap water and have no problem with it - it all comes down to that bottle, I guess.

I recycle at home and work, so no landfills for me either.

I buy them occasionally. What's the big deal? I don't see anyone up in arms about people who buy bottles of pop (which is horrible for you). If I'm in a situation where I've forgotten to bring water and I'm thirsty, I'll buy a water every time. It's better than drinking pop or anything else other than water. I do reuse the bottles and keep filling them up from my Brita (I can't stand tap water, yuck). The bottles are returnable just like pop bottles, why isn't everyone up in arms about the amount of Coke people buy?
