What is it that you simply won't sacrifice? I'm willing to scrimp on pretty much everything except when it comes to certain high quality horse items. I ride horses competitively and there are some pieces of equipment that I believe that you just have to spend the money for. I love finding well loved used equipment for a deal, but I still would never buy something low end. You can really tell the difference, especially with leather goods. Plus, I've had my nicest stuff for years and years. It always cleans up well and just keeps looking great.
I was just thinking, though, how I'll spend the kind of money on horse stuff that I'd never spend on everyday stuff. I won't spend more that $30 on a pair of pants for work, but I'm fine with $200 for a good pair of breeches. Does anyone else have something like that? Something that you just won't sacrifice? |

Home theater equipment, although mostly used on CL. Same with furniture although I don't have much. I admit it: I have expensive taste, and would rather spend more on money for quality than from Ikea.

legal advice/services.
That one comes to top of mind! IT amazes me how many people are extremely penny wise and pound foolish when it comes to real estate transactions or legal defense. Oh, and their wills. I see that all the time through my job. A cheap will can cause a LOT of heart ache and problems. Don't leave something that important to $15 software. I can't think of much I wouldn't scrimp on. Of course, with most goods, I don't equate scrimping with lower quality. Finding a good sale, using coupons, or buying *barely used* does not speak much to quality. But, with certain services, the difference in quality between cheap and expensive can be very significant. |

Back on topic, one of the things I don't scrimp on anymore is alcohol. I'm not a university kid anymore, it's quality over quantity. There probably are other things too but this is the one that comes to mind. When I travel back and forth to Canada, they have some great deals at the border so I usually end up picking up a Johnnie Gold/Blue, or something along those lines for when I meet up with friends. |

I try not to scrimp on food and medicine and dental/health care. I think those are things one should never scrimp on, to preserve their health! I do buy discounted food, but I try to buy mainly nutritious, nutrient-laden food.

Food and medical care. If you aren't healthy, nothing else really matters.
I've never understood the point of single ply TP. It just means you have to use twice as much. You don't really save anything and it is more of a pain.

I didn't include coffee because I have lumped it in with basic human needs...like oxygen.

Use high quality oil and filters for car and am meticulous about having it done when due.
Have good quality, leather cowboy boots, only buy once, they last forever Buy quality dog food, mostly because it is so efficient hardly any clean-up and he earns his keep by entertainment value and security. |

I had to think about this for a while. I have 2 no scrimps:
everyday shoes - I do NOT want to develop the foot problems in my family produce - need to eat healthy but I do buy mostly in season and on sale items (we all get a yearning for some things sometimes). |

I agree with this.
We have a lot of things that we are able to find very high quality in last year's model or even 2nd hand that was top of the line before. It is still great, but we pay a fraction of the price for it. Our living room came out of a wealthier person's living room when they had to foreclose on their house. We also buy good appliances and try to find the best deals. It makes no sense to spend $300 for a dishwasher just to have it break down a few years later and you have to buy the expensive one then anyway. Dawn |

Another thing regarding auto repairs. Use the best parts you can afford. Auto parts places carry parts from more than one supplier for the same part. There's a reason that the exact same part from one manufacturer costs $15.99 and 89.99 from another manufacturer and that reason is QUALITY. Buy once, cry once. Besides if your luck is anything like mine then the cheap parts will fail at the worse possible time. Lots of auto repair shops use the cheap parts because there's a higher markup on them. |
