Hello and welcome. Congrats on buying a home, and a beautiful one with a great deal to boot.

You're making a good decision to getting started with investing, as the quality of your retirement depends upon the choices that you make.

Would that be Vanguard Star you are considering?

Do you or your new wife have access to any employer plans? If so, is there any match offered? Your first investing priority should be getting the full match offered to you. For example, a common matching plan is 50% up to 6% of your salary. That is a guaranteed 50% return on your money and should not be passed up.

Once you have invested enough to get the full match, an IRA (traditional or Roth) held with a quality low-cost custodian is an excellent plan. Star is a fine fund, it is actively managed and a bit conservative for a 30 year old. But that's OK if that is your comfort level.
