Default Personal Term Deposit?! What is the catch?

Hi all. ING Direct is offering a 6.5% interest rate for personal term deposits if you park your money in there for a year.

What is the difference between a personal term deposit and a CD? Why are the rates so amazing?

Thanks!

So far, everything I'm finding about personal term deposits refers to Australia. These accounts may not be offered in the US. I've never heard of them before.

Hi, by the way. How are you? Haven't seen you post for quite a while.

Term Deposits. ING DIRECT term deposit interest rates. Term Deposit

Term Deposit. Best set-up, term deposit interest rates working best for you

Google - what is a term deposit

All US people - please notice the '.au' in the url: this is for the Australian branch of ING only.

You cannot really compare rates on an Australian 'term deposit' with an American 'certificate of deposit' (CD). There is a world of FX rates here you may not want to get into.

So I guess the catch is that it's in AUS dollars, not USD

I doubt Americans would be happy to realize that it would cost $ 1.07 to buy one Australian Dollar. Interest rates are different in every country. American government policy is to keep interest rates artificially low in the hopes of stimulating business to create more jobs. This has been very expensive and no one is sure how long they can keep this going.

The Japanese government tried to do this when they suffered their stock exchange and property bubble bursting in 1991 [hokkai] but their economy is still struggling even though interest is set at zero. Their latest disaster [tsunami and nuclear plant disaster] has made the situation even worse.

I agree with your statement that it differs in different countries according to your management and situation in economy .
