This is news that the American people will likely cheer about for weeks, and with good reason--he has stood as a symbol since the 1990's of the terrible events our country (and the world) has experienced. I'm curious, however, what sort of real impact it will have at this point. Certainly, he was a powerful leader and influence in the al Qaida network, but since he went into hiding nearly a decade ago, his influence (and his health) has dwindled. Will his death really change anything? Without a doubt, his death is a highly iconic victory for the U.S. But to what effect?

Personally, I don't see how this will have any effect at all, except the government will no longer be spending billions of dollars looking for him. Terrorism isn't going to suddenly stop because bin Laden is dead. Al Qaeda isn't going to go out of business, nor is any other terrorist group. It gives the 24 hour news networks something to talk about for a few days, but then it will be back to business as usual.

Also, there was speculation that it would be difficult to find a country willing to accept the remains. I agree with DS on this topic. And I'm sure there is another 10+ power players waiting to rise and take his spotlight.

I'm wonering why we did not bury him with pig parts after posting his head on a battle ship. He deserved no religious recognition of any kind. I don't recall him caring about the death ritials of the 3k he killed on 9/11.

I'm, frankly, glad we didn't catch him alive. Can you imagine the circus that would have ensued with the media and deciding where to keep him and how to conduct a trial. Another billion spent trying to bring this to a close.

I personally would like his head on a stick at the site of the twin towers for all of AL-Queda to view.
