Default Does a check ever EXPIRE?

I just discovered an uncashed check from 2006. there must have been a good reason why I didn't cash it, because I ALWAYS cash checks immedicately. Since I didn't make any notes, I'm not sure. Anybody ever deposited a really old check and it was good?

Checks are considered 'staledated' after a set period of time. Usually about 6 months. No bank will take a check from 2006.

Best to go to the original issuer and get a new check issued.

If you try to deposit the check and the bank takes it (they deposit it quickly without looking at the date), you might end up with a mess. The check could bounce if the account the check was written from does not have the funds to cover it or if the account is closed. Also if your bank deposits it and you start writing checks based on that check and later the check does not clear you might have overdraft fees of your account to deal with.

Your best bet IF the ammount of the check is worth the work, is to go back to who wrote the check and see if they are willing to give you a new check.

If it was a relative who can afford the check then you might get another check, if it was a rebate check or a check from yard sell it could be difficult.

Good Luck!
