Default Self Tax Return Filers

If you are filing your taxes yourself, do not forget to take your credit on line 63(make work pay credit) of 1040. 400 single, 800 joint filers.

If you have any other advice for self filers, please state them.

Another thing to remember is to factor in any qualified dividends you may have. Schedule D (investment gains/losses) instructs you to fill out the worksheet in the 1040 instructions, but I nearly forgot to, since it wasn't a fillable form that I could save as a separate file. Doing so saved me almost $100 on my total tax (raised my refund).

On a side note, I was happy to realize that I nearly managed a $0 refund this year... Except for having not planned for the Making Work Pay credit and a couple others, I would have ended up with a $27 refund.

It *can* be $400 single, $800 MFJ. Do the worksheet to see what you are entitled to receive.
