Canada switched from $1. paper to coin in 1987 and it has been said to save $250 million. The gov`t wants to reduce spending but the public rejects change. I still have a boxful of JFK half dollars and there was no uproar when they were produced. I`m guessing there are 2 million of these in boxes all over the world. I think there is also a box of silver dollars cast for various presidents with DH's coin collection. Were these cast for collectors or were they in general service?

The half-dollar coin wasn't made in place of anything else. We still had quarters. We still had both paper and metal dollars, so no reason for any uproar.

I'm not aware of any presidential silver dollars. Those may have just been commemorative coins, not actual circulating legal tender.

The public does resist change. That's why I said the only way to get rid of the dollar bill and get people to use a dollar coin is to force the issue. Stop producing the bills.
