Default Okay Dish Network you win

So at the beginning of the year, I was inspired by the decluttering threads and decided to get rid of some of my satellite channels. I reasoned that they only showed garbage anyway and I could save about $200 a year. For the first month everything was okay. Well last night, I settled down to watch a little telly and I found that they removed the Hallmark channel and the Hallmark movie channel!

No Matlock. No Little House on the Prairie. That did it.

So I re-upgraded back to my original programming much to the relief of my kids. *sigh* I'll have to find another way to declutter.

I know the feeling. I gave in to Comcast on Tuesday.

Since getting cable a few years ago (we were one of the last holdouts), we've had their basic package for $10/month. From the day it was hooked up, we were actually getting a bunch of channels we weren't supposed to have for what we were paying, but I certainly wasn't going to call and tell them that. When they converted to all digital in December, we lost all of those extra channels, so for the past two months, we were back to the bare bones.

I finally broke down on Tuesday and called to upgrade. We went from $10 (actually $11+) to $29.99 but got back pretty much all of the channels we used to have. Also, as soon as I stop by the Comcast office and pick up a new cable box, we'll also have the on demand stuff and the on screen program guide. Plus, we'll be able to use our iPhones as remote controls which will be cool.

As a Time Warner subscriber I actually got rid of a "tier" that had channels I wanted but mostly contained a bunch of stuff I didn't want. They made a rearrangement that allowed me to do this but not for me exclusively. One of the few times I've been satisfied with calling them. I do call them a couple times a year to see if I can get a better deal and I always do. I'm sure they bank on those who aren't quite as diligent.

Steve looks like their tactic worked. Maybe the extra channels were not an accident but to get you hooked on those channels and then cutting them off putting you in withdrawals. Sneaky!

Nah. Had we actually only had the channels included in the $10 plan, we probably would have upgraded a long time ago and paid the higher rate. This way, we got the "free" channels for 3 years or so. I think we made out better in that deal. We even had HBO that whole time and that definitely wasn't included in the $10 deal.
