Default Credit Report

Where do you all go to get your annual/semi-annual credit report? I want to take a look at it, but I want to make sure I'm going to a reputable place to do it.

Yep. The only place that is truly free is annualcreditreport.com. The other places make you sign up for some credit-monitoring service and bill you if you don't cancel before the free trial period runs out.

I never had to enter a CC number on their site, nor do I see any place on their site to "opt out." Am I in the clear, or are they going to bill me? And if they do, how do they know which CC to bill me to?

annualcreditreport.com is free. No trial to sign up for. No billing.

Other sites, like freecreditreport.com, are not free. They require you to sign up for a free trial of a service and bill you if you don't cancel in time.

Good to know thanks!

Here's the Wiki for additional info:

Annualcreditreport.com is a website jointly operated by the three major U.S. credit reporting agencies, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. The site was created in order to comply with their obligations under the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) to provide a mechanism for American consumers to receive a free annual credit report.

I get 3 free reports a year by staggering which of the 3 I request. My husband requests a different company than I do, so every 4 months, we get 2/3 credit reporting bureaus.

General question for the crowd... Do husband/wife credit reports and scores tend to be pretty much the same? I suppose if all of your accounts are joint, that would be a pretty significant overlap, particularly over time...

And as you mention, rotating between them is definitely the best way to go... Request a credit report from one of the 3 bureaus every 4 months. They won't always be identical between the 3 bureaus, but they do tend to be moderately close -- enough that if something shady's going on, you'll be able to catch it a lot faster.

Interesting question. I guess over time (we've been married 19 years) they have gotten more similar but there are still plenty of things on each that are unique - student loans, car loans, credit cards only in one name, etc. Certainly, you always need to pull both if for no other reason than to check for identity theft and errors.

I suppose the three bureaus will have almost the same results. Regarding the question on the scores for husband and wife, it is possible to be almost the same because the couple are using their credit cards to spread the household expenses without going over the ideal limit for each card. They both need to have good scores for future use.

Ours generally are, but my husband has a homebuilders store credit card that I don't have, and I have an extra Visa, so there are slight variances.
