My kids (11 and 8 y.o.) are responsible for:
Keeping their rooms clean Cleaning bunny and guinea pig cages and frog aquarium Feeding pets Folding clothes (theirs) and putting them away Help with cleaning, vaccuuming and washing the car Dog walking Taking out the compost Help with mowing the lawn (a non-power push mower) Taking the recycling bins out to the curb, and back Help with raking leaves in the fall Help with cleaning the bathroom Responsible for cleaning any mess they make Help with general house straightening at times, or when company is expected Shredding junk mail Setting the table Help with bringing in the groceries Help with straightening out the coat/shoe closet Sprouting sprouts in our sprouter Fetching water from our distiller that we keep in the basement, and refilling it There's probably more, but these are what comes to mind at the moment....... (In a few years I would like the kids to help out more with laundry and dishes -- and also with some meal preparation.) |

My kids are 1 and 3 so I have a short list
![]() DS3y: 1 put all his own laundry away, 2.clean up after self, 3. put dishes on counter after meals. DD1y: 1. clean up after self, 2. bring laundry to her room for me to refold and put in drawers. We clean up toys twice a day usually, once before lunch and once before dinner, so they both share in that. They also help with any chore that I am doing if they are interested, or if I really need it. (this part is long, but I figure it might help to know what on erth a 1 year old can do to help, never know till you try it.) Laundry they take the clean basket to the living room, and empty the lint trap, (then bring it back and stick it in upside down and empty for mom or dad to fix .) also DD will 'help' bring me the laundry and DS will help fold small shirts, pants and washclothes, still working on hand towels.Dishes they put away the ones they can reach if it is convenient (sometimes I do it at lunchtinme and they should be eating) Vacuuming they move the toys out of my way and the tables or chairs as needed, plus pick up toys before vacuuming. DS usually takes a turn trying but since my vacuum is basicaly shot it doesn't do much good. Cleaning kitchen, help put dishes in dishwasher, for me to rearange later . wipe table, for me to 'touch up later' bring dishes to counter (or mommy DD is too short) put away stuff tey can rech int he cuboard, or bring it to me if they can't.Cooking, and meals, DS gets the stuff out of the cuboard he can reach and the milk or wahtever in the fridge, he also helps stir so we use DEEP bowls! Groceries, they both can carry in light stuff, less than a pound and not to weirdly shapped, somehow it must be carriable in one hand, cause the other one is used to get up our small front stoop. Makes for some interesting trips by DH nad I , trying to find and save appropriate stuff for a DS who will be rather disapointed without. (DD doesn't seem to mind much) Generally my goal, in having them help, is the idea that we should all share in the work, (and to keep them doing what I don't mind rather than being counterproductive) but my share seems to be a lot bigger than theirs, 'course I am a lot bigger than them! |

DD is in charge of feeding and walking the dog and the fish. She also has to help bathe the dog and change the fish water every weekend (I do most of the job, but she has to help and she "owns" that chore) She helps fix her lunchbox for school in the mornings. She helps with cooking on the weekends. She helps make beds on weekends, too.
DD is 4.5 years old |
