Default prescription vs over the counter

I recently had a prescription filled at a local chain pharmacy in my town. I dont normally go there, but it was during the night after a trip to the emergency room. They charged me 9.99 for 20 pills. Later, after seeing my regular dr, she told me to continue it, and I went to my regular pharmacy. Come to find out, it was an over the counter, and could get a bottle of 100 for 6.99. I have phoned the office of the chain, and they are investagaing why I was charged the higher price and not sold an over the counter box of 24 pills. Then today, I got a rejection letter from my insurance, rejecting the 9.99 I had turned in. So, when getting a prescription filled, make sure it is not an over the counter. Years ago i worked in a pharmacy--at that time, this particular drug was prescription only. I was not aware it had changed.

I have found that it's worthwhile checking with your doctor every year if you have to take prescription medicine on a long term basis. There are lots of new drugs coming out with amny of them cheaper and like mom-from-missouri mentioned, many are becomming available over the counter.
