Tried EEEpc @1.5 lbs, 7" screen, great for travel, & sporatic use; not practical for my regular use $300. CND. from ecost.com
Bought a HP 12.1" 160 GB, 1.6 GHZ AMD processor 95% keyboard, 4-5 hr. battery, xternal CD/DVD burner $500. CND. a month ago. Did not like the trackpad, added my cordless mouse for comfort. Use WLAN I prefer my HP laptop... likely because I've used it for a couple of years, know the keyboard in the dark. Last edited by snafu : 07-27-2009 at 04:57 PM. |

I would NOT recommend a 7" screen. The netbooks have 10" screens and those are quite workable. They also run $300USD.

So I've started looking into buying a netbook... I'm going to be going all over the country basically for the next 7-8 months (between a long series of temporary duty assignments, personal leave, and training programs) until I finally move to Japan, my next duty station -- where I'll also be traveling regularly to many different countries as part of my job. So for the portability and ready access to my data, files, and the internet, the netbooks look great, especially considering how frequently I'll be away from my home (desktop) computer.
But besides the obvious challenge of trying to decide which one to buy, I've got a question.... does anyone know how widespread WiFi is internationally? I'll be in places like Japan, Australia, Korea, and other countries in the west Pacific. I'm just trying to figure out if I'll still be able to access the internet with a netbook I get here in the states wherever in the world I find myself.....

I just read an article the other day about how Seoul is one of the most wired, technologically advanced cities in the world. If they are any indication of what things are like in the region, it sounds like it is much better than in the US.

Most computers are from SE Asia, you'll be taking machine back to motherland! They have a better education system for math and they love technology and buying the newest, latest pce of equipment. The downside is that everyone is chatting loudly on Blackberry type unit, text messaging while pretending to listen to your presentation.
Even the farmers w-aay out on the terraces chat on their mobiles while driving the oxen! |
