Default Teaching Teens Financial Principles

Why is it that there is so much debt? As a school teacher I am appalled that there is little effort in teaching our teens financial principles. That should be the first thing that is taught in school.
It is important to teach these principles early, rather than waiting until we are adults, in financial trouble.

I think this is the first thing that should be taught at home. I have no desire for my kids to learn financial planning from the government. That's just me though.

well, being that i did not get any training in the financial aspects of life either from my home or from my school. I have to vote that ANY education on finances is better then NO education.
home, government, church, what-ever!

Exactly... As a high school teacher and an investor I see most of the students that gradudate leave with little or no financial knowledge or understanding. Furthermore, by the time they are a couple of years out, they are in debt, living paycheck to paycheck and are struggling; they are not learning the principles of success... at school or at home!

So go offer a local free class in your community
we don't need more government taking over, we need more parents and people looking out for what is in their families best intrest.

Teach your own, spread the polite word about your anti debt habits, get your own kids in the game. but please don't ask the schools to teach more, better to have the kids out earlier learning what they want, so kids have a hance to come around to the money matters before they are 25 or worse!

I have a couple of buddies. They both bought houses at the same time about 4 years ago. One bought the house and lived in it, the other rented out the basement. Today, one has over a million dollars in property value and hundreds of thousands of net worth, the other has only a quarter of a million dollars and has a negative net worth... What is going on?
