Default Internet Explorer 8 Anyone?

I've been getting ad messages about upgrading my browser to IE8. I currently have IE6 which seems to be developing problems. Is IE8 a good bet or a bigger headache than Internet Explorer 6?

If you want a browser that's not directly connected to the rest of your operating system, firefox or chrome is the way to go. Much of what IE has as an issue is usually due to the fact that it's also the backbone of the OS.

To answer your question, however, no I have not had any experience with IE 8 yet.

For security purposes, IE6 should not be used, or should at least have Active X removed. IE6 is the last IE iteration to have OS-level integration that ultimately proved so much of security risk that, I think MS sent out a notice for everyone to make sure Active X is turned off. I believe the latest downloads for them already have Active X turned off by default.

IE7 on up, I believe they have removed those connections, and can work as a self-contained application. I don't know anything about IE8 though. I only use Firefox at this time.

(edit: Oops, blankcheck already mentioned what I am saying here.)

IE8 is actually pretty good. I haven't had any issues with it and it has pretty much all the features of firefox such as tabs and what not.

I second Firefox. There are tons of plugins and customization options, and it's more stable and secure than IE.

I like what's being said here. Honestly, I used to be an IE type of guy; however, I've since seen the light and really enjoy using Firefox. It's just better. Period.

Here's Walt Mossberg's review of IE8.

The main reason why I am using Firefox is because I use Linux at home, but windows at work. So, Firefox is the best choice for me due to its cross-platform compatibility....

IE8: It seems to be working for me! I should really switch to Firefox. I had it on my old computer and really liked it.

If I switch from IE to Firefox, what happens to my browser settings and cookies?

Uggh, I don't like saying one over the other because it sounds like I'm their spokesperson.

Anyway...bookmarks and RSS feeds can be automatically exported over.

For each individual website, I don't think cookies are carried over.

If you haven't had a tabbed browser experience yet, I'm not sure how to answer what happens to your browser settings. It's a separate program, so you're starting from scratch. I see that as a good thing, because I got to tinker with it so much. Hooray add-ons!

I'd rather jump off the Empire State Building than to use IE any version. All I know is when I "upgraded"to 7 things went nuts on my PC. Get and stick with Firefox. I've never had a moment's grief with Firefox.

Hehe, early adopter eh?

I used to be like that, and I jumped into BeOS with both feet.

But I'm not like that anymore. Still, Linux works just fine for me.

Firefox user here too.

I don't have any reason to put down IE or Microsoft, however, the fact is that I prefer Firefox for many reasons -- speed, compliance, features, security, add-ons, how it stores your bookmarks, etc.

I just downloaded the version 3.0.8 update this week.

A few years ago, I downloaded the IE7 with my older HP conputer and it caused issues with my computer. HP said that th IE7 was incompatible with the HP machines (st that time). Always check with your manufacturer before downloading certain programs. I even had an issue with a service pak. I have both on my computer so I can use whichever one I want.

You'll have to forgive me but I dont recommend IE. Firefox is better in many ways especially security-wise.

Does Firefox accept importation of favorites (bookmarks) and cookies from Internet Explorer 6? Also how compatible with Yahoo! is Firefox?

I recently moved over to Firefox, and thankfully it automatically imported all of my IE bookmarks, cookies, everything.... I don't use Yahoo very much, but I know there's a Yahoo toolbar available for firefox, if that means anything (it tagged along for the ride on a new Java update I downloaded... I hate when they do that)
