Default American Express Gift Cheques

In the past, I have given out gift cards or pre-paid debit cards as gifts for special occasions. I am thinking about instead giving out American Express Gift Cheques. They look fancy and come in a gold envelope--much cooler than a generic plastic card. Apparently they can be used like cash (much like traveler's cheques), never expire, and can even be transferred to another person. I think it would make a cool and memorable gift.

Has anyone ever given, received, or used one of these? Do normal establishments accept this as a valid form of payment? From what I can tell, places that accept checks should accept these. American Express states they can be used almost anywhere like cash. I want to be sure that's the case before ordering a bunch of them.

Any help?

I received and used one late last year. I was told they could be used anywhere American Express was accepted. I used it at a restaurant. It took awhile for them to figure out how to enter it "correctly" in the computer/register. Eventually a manager had to do it.

I could see some places not accepting them after that experience (because they simply do not know what to do with them). At least with gift cards you know there will not be a hassle.

I have used one before... no questions asked... however I can see some places not excepting them due to the fact that there simply aren't that many of them in circulation compared to all the other payment options. I would call around first...

Thanks for the comments. I bought $1,000 worth (the max they'd let me purchase in a month) to stockpile for last minute gifts.

Already given two $50 cheques out and the recepients loved them!
