I don't use eBay/half.com/PayPal any longer but, when I did sell on half.com, I don't think I ever used their average price for determining mine. For one, it calculates an average based on items sold, not items for sale. This may be advantageous in one way but it won't help you sell your book at $10 when there are 20 others for sale at $7.
FWIW, here is what I recall doing as a seller --
I usually just took a look at the lowest prices of the book title in the same condition I would be listing mine and made my price fall in line with those figures. If I wanted to try to sell mine quickly, I would set mine to just under the lowest price offered.
Other considerations that provide an exception to how I sometimes priced my books, is if someone had a price that was much lower than others and/or if someone selling had a lukewarm or inadequate feedback rating. So, for an example, if a book was listed for the low prices of $20, $19, $18.50, and $10, I would price mine at $17. Once the $10 one sold, I would be the low price.
Or, if another book was listed for the low prices of $9, $8, $7, and $5, but the $5 one was being sold by someone with some negative ratings or a low total rating, I would price mine somewhere between $6 and $10, not concerning myself with the low price.
