Default The Dollar General is expensive!

I'm not sure if many of you have a Dollar General...it is not a true dollar store. Sure, some things are only a buck....but most things are just under $10.

I stopped in my local Dollar General to pick up shampoo, conditioner and bar soap. The same off-brands were at my real dollar store...but these were $4-$5 each! I was pissed.

Maybe I am just cheap...but these were the usual dollar store brands selling for much more. If I wanted a drug store brand, I would have gone to a drug store and paid $4-$5!

::rant over::

Needless to say, I did come home with a puzzle, wordsearch and coloring book for my niece to play with while I babysit her...and I picked up a bottle of bathroom cleaner.

All of those things...were $1.

I agree that they aren't great. I also notice that when they advertise a certain thing at a good enough price to draw me in, I find that they do not have the item at all. Seems very suspicious to me. I've bought freezer bags, greeting cards, and laundry detergent there more than any thing else. Detergent and freezer bag prices are so-so.

My family or I has never been keen on buying washing materials using the dollar store. You won't know what's inside and they might ruin your clothes which in turn will make you spend more money to replace them.

Dollar General sucks. It is like Ghetto Rite Aid or something.
Dollar Tree is soooooo much better!

YES! I seriously love the dollar tree. Every time I go, I am amazed at the deals they have there.

Dollar Tree rocks!

But the Dollar General, Family Dollar, etc. stink. And it's amazing how many people are sucked-in to shopping there, believing they're sooooooo cheap. I've tried to explain to a friend that you can shop so much cheaper at Wal-Mart for the same items (provided you only buy those things and don't overspend on a bunch of other things), but she will not believe me.

I agree with most of the remarks here. That is why I shop at only locally owned dollar stores or resale shops

Our Dollar General is much cheaper than the nearest Walmart. At DG I can get suave shampoo for 88 cents. Same size bottle at walmart is $1.38. Plus, walmart is a 40 minute drive and DG is a 18 minute drive.
Also, DG take coupons--many people don't know that.

Interesting, MfM. I've got a DG two blocks from me and it is next door to a Save-a-Lot (cheap grocery chain), so as you might imagine, I do not totally snub it.

Regarding those $1 stores-- I do not like them very much either, though there are some things I might buy there. I have two of them within walking distance, as well.

We don't have any dollar generals near us but we have a Family dollar near us. I don't like going in there because they are cluttered and dirty. However I did need a really cheap DVD player and got one for $20 almost a year ago from there.

There is a Dollar tree right next dolar to Family Dollar. It is very clean and organized. Better help too.

I occasionally shop at Dollar General for some items, but you do have to watch the prices. The DG brand batteries are cheap, but they don't last long so don't get suckered in by those. DG has never been an "everything's a dollar" type store, so I'm not quite sure why some people are mad about that.

I certainly didn't get mad because it wasn't a true dollar store...I was mad because paying $6 for suave shampoo is stupid.
