If you're an AAdvantage member and your miles are about to expire (they expire after 18 months of inactivity), you can reset the clock by signing up at Points.com. You get a bonus of 100 miles for signing up, but more importantly it gives you activity in your account to prevent expiring for another 18 months.
I'm not very impressed with Points.com, but I found this to be a useful feature. |

I don't know about AA, but I know with USAir, you can use points to get a magazine subscription. There are usually options that use very few points, so you get the magazine and keep your account active.
Personally, I don't care as we fly so very rarely that we'll never earn a free trip in our lifetime, but I have used the points to get free magazines that way.
