How to roll coins? Instead of Coinstar

Ok, so now I'm convinced that I should be rolling the coins from my monthly change jar by hand (well I have paper money in the jar but thankfully that doesn't need rolling). So how do I go about doing it? What's the process? And do I just take it to the bank afterwards and ask for the dollar equivalent? Thanks.

You go get a kid old enough not to swallow them and count to 10 or so, and young enough to think one on one time is cool. Then count stack and roll. The bank will give you free coin papers, or did last time I checked 4 years ago. Of course some kabitzing about what is on the coins, and how they are ridged or not, and different sizes, and what they are made of, and how it takes forever to make a roll of nickles. and how some quarters have one thing on them aned some have another, (my son is fascinated by the texas quarter cause it has texas on it, and he knows that state, he doesn't know the heads at all well. can't blame him)and how you are getting paid x amount by the hour (taking the total rolled divided by the time) Depending on the age a special treat of some of the cash is in order. Also if any canadian ones have snuck in notice how they are close but not the same (country depending, suppose if you are in canada the reverse for american stuff and whatnot). The kabitzing was the best part when I was a kid, kidof lost intrest when I was old enough to do it myself.

Oh and if your kids are old enough for school, you can so take them out for a day of coin fun, it is way more than they would be learning in class anyway .


I always deposit them, but a bank you have an account with will give you cash for them. n(or mine will)

are you asking, how many of each denomination make a roll?
Pennys are rolled in .50 increments, Dimes in $5.00 increments, Nickels are $2.00 and Quarters are $10.00

The next time you go to the bank, ask the teller for coint rolls. I've always received them for free from my bank. Once you have the rolls, you insert the coins and then my bank requires that I write my account number on the outside (so that if there aren't enough coins inside the roll, they know who rolled it). My old bank never did that, but the one I use now does. You can either deposit them or exchange them for cash.

Most banks now charge you if you take in loose coins. They want them rolled. But, you can go to http://www.theunderstory.com and click on your state. It will show you all the banks that take unrolled change and don't charge you for it. Gives other neat money tips too.

I picked up a sort-n-save bank at a garage sale for a dollar. Put thre coins in and they are sorted by denomination. The task of rolling is made easier too because the coins are sorted into tubes and you just push the wrapper over the coins.

Don't buy a fancy machine driven one. A cheap and simple one is best. In the meantime sort your coins by hand. Why pay coinstar?

Just make sure to find out if your savings bank charges for rolled coins!!! SI Bank and Trust charges 0.15 per ROLL.. thats alot considering how your change got there in the first place!

Our comercial bank is supposed to charge after 5 rolls but I always manage to bring my 2 year old to work her magic with the tellers (distraction works 90% of the time!
