Default Public school fees - shocking!

I registered DD for high school today. My total expenses so far: $773! This includes a flat fee, some book fees (most books are free ), band fees (not including an instrument), fees for participation in 1 sport and 1 club, and a yearbook.

I know this is not the end either. I predict a uniform for the sport, and I promised her a school t-shirt. Not to mention school supplies, back to school clothes, and other unforeseens.

Anyone else have to pay this much?

I paid $132 for my high schooler and $45 for my elementary kid. I thought that was high. I guess I should be thankful now.

That is on top of $7,000 in property taxes just for the schools.

Wow, your district must have huge fees. I know book fees are around $100 for high schoolers in my district, but not sure what the other fees.

Wow, I pay $1082 in property taxes to the school and that's it. I've never had to pay them any "fees".

I don't think our public schools charge anything like an enrollment fee. Heck, our schools will give you clothes to attend (uniform) if you ask and enter you into a lottery for a television (or whatever) just for managing to show up the week school is scheduled to begin. Charging fees to attend public schools strikes me as wrong, even. I guess that I've been conditioned to free schools.

The cheerleaders need golf carts and the schools need not just one but two pools each.

If you live in Missouri enjoy the back-to-school tax free weekend going on Fri-Sun. Maybe you'll save a little money to pay for some of the fees we have been talking about.
