Who watched Suze Orman tonite?
Did any of you catch the Suze Orman show tonite (5/31)? Any clue who the lady was ("Jane") who is going to inherit $40 million. Her brother will inherit the same. Her father died in April (though it sounded like she may have been referring to April 2007). I know there are a lot of rich people out there, but somebody who left behind at least $80 million would probably have made the news.
I was just curious.
We love watching Suze's show. It is one of the few shows that we can all agree on watching together. We always get a good laugh from the "Can I Afford It?" segment and it always provides good teaching opportunities with our daughter. If you have kids and you're trying to teach them about personal finance issues, consider watching this show with them each week. If it is on after bedtime, tape it and watch it some other time.

Not necessarily. Many rich, especially the 'old money' rich, try to keep things private.

I watched it! First~ Did you catch Suze's mouth DROP! My mouth dropped. But Suze was flustered! And I think Suze should have offered to take 'Jane' on as one of her clients. Or refer her to one of Suze's personal contacts. Clearly the woman trusts Suze, if she's calling in. And if this woman is related to a BIG NAME person (very likely), then this woman will become a big name and Suze would get attention by association. Not that Suze needs marketing at this point, but it never hurts.

If its really Texas the woman is calling from, then the family must be related to Anna Nicole Smiths deceased husband...another oil baron.

I absolutely love watching Suze Orman! About two months ago, we downgraded our satellite to the "family package" and now we don't have CNBC anymore.
This Suze talk makes me really miss it! I just hate to spend another $20 a month for one show! That is the only channel it airs on, isn't it?

Yeah, its only on CNBC. It's for sure on Sat nights, but I caught it playing one day during the afternoon a few days ago...So I guess they are starting to air re-runs?

Think I know who "Jane" is
I think she is using Jane as in Jane Doe, but lives in Texas.
It is Holly Ann Heston Rochell and Charlton Heston just died in April 2008 -- she has one brother (Fraser).
He was rich enuf to leave each child a lot and most to his wife.
She hadn't yet rolled over the 401K because it just happened in April 2008.

We watched the first half but I need to check my DVR for the 2nd half. I don't think we got to the $40 million person... only to the "make more out of less" sections
I love Suze... its actually one show my DH will watch with me cause I don't have too many shows that I watch.

Personally, I don't like Suze. Her personal finance advice may be good, but I think her investing advice is terrible. She recently said "I'm not sure you can buy and hold anymore...you have to be a very active investor..." When people are paid millions of dollars and they can't correctly predict market trends (with reliability), I don't know how she expects the average investor to.

My fiance and his whole family hate her because back in the day she was broke but acting like a millionaire. My fiances family lives in NY, and the father works in the financial industry. Once he saw the way she was living and the way she was acting, he was disgusted. They have never given her a second chance and just rant about her show.
But they dont know that she admits to that, and uses it as an example when she gets into the psychology of money. Oh well. I have to either go watch suze in the bedroom, or catch it when I can.
I do think there is a correlation between my fiances lack of interest and participation in our finances and his low tolerance for suze. He just finds it boring, and thinks its all "you earn a dollar, you spend a dollar, dont spend more than you earn" talk.
I on the other hand am totally fascinated by all the options there is for your money, and all the different outcomes of those options. And I love the psychology behind the spending habits.

gamecock43 - I do like that even though she gives the same basic advice over and over, she also tailors her advice to the situation. Last night was a perfect example. Early in the show, a guy called who had found out his wife secretly ran up thousands in CC debt. She advised him to use the tax refund and work bonus to pay it off. Later, a woman called whose husband was constantly overspending and Suze told her not to pay it off with her savings. Suze then stopped to explain why she gave different advice to each caller in pretty similar situations, and her reasoning made a lot of sense.

Suze's jaw definately dropped when she said 40 million. I think I could swing living off 2 million a year.

This thread is about identifying Jane
and not about whether you like Suze Orman or not.
And for Jane, Suze didn't give investing advice ... she told 'Jane" what SHE does because she judged that 'Jane" seemed skeptical about taking advice from others and sketish about the stockmarket, etc.
Does anyone else think "Jane" is Holly Heston Rochelle? She did say she already has several houses.
Anyone have any more ideas about who "Jane" could be?

justme8 - I don't mind discussing what folks think of Suze Orman. I happen to enjoy her show and have read a couple of her books. I think overall she gives good advice. What I often don't like is when she plays psychologist and tries to give advice on relationships and other non-financial issues. I think there are others who are far better trained to handle that kind of advice.

But on this show (5/31/08) she did give good advice (re - relationship).
It wasn't really advice as much as telling the person to take a look at their relationship ... that perhaps the finances brought up wasn't what was bothering the person (and I think that is sound 'advice' to give to anyone, rather than merely answering the financial question as though her particular situation and how she felt about the man she is about to marry doesn't play into it).
I like Suze Orman and think the entire U.S. wouldn't be in the mess we are in now, if way more people followed her advice. She definitely tells people not to buy things OR HOUSES that they cannot afford. Our housing mess is due entirely to people buying houses they cannot afford - just because banks would give them loans. And this housing mess has hurt others who do follow Suze's advice.
If you can't afford a fancy vacation, then you don't go on one. Same with buying too many clothes or shoes or a house too big for what you can afford.
And failing to "save for a rainy day" is another big mistake that most people make. Also failing to take out adequate insurance (as a back up --- I'm a big believer in having disability insurance because anyone could get in a car accident and you sure want to still have money for mortgage and food).

'Jane' could be a Heston heir. I dont know anything about rich families and who's died lately specifically. When someone says the Heston family, I think of that old hollywood cowboy actor (charlton heston?) though I doubt you are referring to that guy, cuz actors dont make that kind of money.
I thought it was a clue that the woman said she has been broke before, implying there is drama going on in the family and she has previously been cut off.

Maybe the problem is this: Those that need to watch Suze Orman are out shopping or on fancy vacations or think they'd don't need advice, and those of us watching are, in general, the people who do not need her advice. We are already doing most of what Suze advises.

Gamecock43:
I think Charleton Heston was known to have tons of money in his latter years. And he did die in April 2008.
You only have 90 days to do a rollover from 401K to IRA.
Also, she did not mention that her mother was dead. And Charleton's wife is still alive. The daughter is adopted.

I think Suzes just a tad ahead of her time. There is no money education out there. School children would benefit from learning how to follow stocks, learning how to budget, calculate tax, interest, and mortgages.
We are to reliant on parents teaching the kids, and everyone knows how that is going, or there are too many industries dependant on people being financially ignorant.
