How did a MOVIE STAR get 40 million dollars!? Forgetting that there is a wife and brother who are also inheriting money and assuming 40 million was the total amount...how does a movie star have that kind of money? wow.

I agree. I just think sometimes (not on this episode) she goes a little too far.

I disagree. If that were true, the calls and "can I afford it" questions would all be pretty boring. Everybody would get "approved" and nobody would be calling in with financial difficulties. Clearly, folks who need help are watching.

Aaron Spelling is a weird one --- He had $500 million and left it all to his wife, except for $850,000 to a couple kids. $850K is a drop in the bucket when you have $500 million -- it's almost an insult.

Plus his wife doesn't need $500 mil --- she could do well on $300 million -- and he could have left $100 mil to each of 2 kids. It doesn't really make sense.

Disney Steve:

But those people calling in (watching the show, too) are being financially responsible. The non-financially responsible people just go buy what they want and go into massive credit card debt. We all know that is true.

Are you serious? Of course they have that kind of money. Take a look at this list:
List of highest-paid actors - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bruce Willis (#2 on the list) earned $103 million just for "The Sixth Sense", just one movie out of all he has done in his career.

I'm sure Charlton Heston also earned plenty from work outside of acting such as speaking engagements and such. Many famous people earn up to $50,000 for giving a speech. Heston probably wasn't in that category, but he certainly could have gotten $10,000 for an appearance.

A lot of people don't want to give their kids a ton of money. Look at Warren Buffet. Also, keep in mind that Spelling's kids probably already have money. Tori earns millions on her own.

Dsiney: You said "clearly those that need help are watching"

That's not true at all.

All statistics show that people are saving hardly anything and the majority of people have 5 to 13 credit cards and have amassed lots of credit card debt. Those people are the ones that should be watching and are not!

Yes, they are being responsible by calling for help. But when they lay out their problem, it is often clear that they have not been responsible up until that point.

I truly wonder sometimes about the folks calling in for the "Can I Afford It?" segment. What the heck are some of these people thinking? Like the guy last night who earned about $35,000 but wanted to buy a $45,000 car.

yeah, I guess your right. I hear actors/actress earnings and any number over 2 million dollars is in one ear and out the other, because its just over my head. I cant get my head around those kinds of numbers.

How did Aaron Spelling get $500 million? I think they get more off movies and residuals than we know -- and with good investing .....

Compounded interest isn't known as the 8th wonder of the world for nothing!

Yes, I'm sure royalties play a big part in it. Spelling created many well-known and successful shows. He probably made a fortune in syndication fees.

And compound interest is truly a miraculous thing.

Aaron has been a lifelong TV producer, most notably producing beverly hills 90210, Charmed, and another teen show I cant remember.
How did he get 500 million? I have no idea. When we get to numbers like that I cant even think straight to do out the math.

Charlton Heston was big back when he got BEST ACTOR in 1959. Didnt' he do Planet of the Apes and all those 3 or 4 movies after that? He had to be getting tons of residuals and for over years -- it's been 47 years since 1959.

Most notably 90210 and Charmed? LOL.....if those were his most notable shows then he would likely NOT have 500 million. Love Boat, Charlie's Angels, Starksky and Hutch, Dynasty, and Melrose Place were probably the ones that put him over the top.

Just for the record --- in case I win Megamillions -- Suze helped me know that Municipal Bonds would be an easy way to go ... getting tax free interest and not being subject to the stock market swings.

True. That was a good tip, not that most of us will ever need it. Once you are talking about more money than you could ever hope to spend, growth becomes unimportant. Preserving capital and generating income is all you need.

My 5th grader just had a unit on stock in his math class. They had $50,000 to buy stocks, followed them for a few months, could sell if they wanted, etc. At the end of the unit, they figured their gains or losses. My 8th grader is just finishing a unit on budgeting - given a career, salary, expenses, etc. They have had other similar teachings throughout the years at their school.
