My Mom just recently built a custom home w/all stainless appliances about 2 years ago. She HATES them, says she is constantly having to clean off the smudges. And she's already a neatnik, so it isn't like she was some kind of slob to begin with.

Homes that are alive with change will not feel so depressingly dated as ones that strived to look top notch at one frozen moment in time. If you want your kitchen to look less frozen in time, less identifiable as having been remodeled in 2008, then I say go with non-matching appliances. Heck, I even say throw in some cabinetry that is not out of the same model line as the rest.

But the Oracle has one heck of a broken down looking kitchen, so weigh that against her words. The Oracle keeps bizarre wallpaper in her kitchen because it is humorous. The wallpaper is so not her own taste, yet it is immensely functional--scrubbable vinyl, you know. A real treat is that when the Oracle walks into the kitchen without her glasses on, she thinks she sees giant ,blue-grey snails arranged in repeating patterns on her walls. This makes the Oracle laugh and think about giving others decorating advice: Allow for humor. Stoves, refrigerators, and dishwashers can get too serious.

Thank you for making my night!

I see no problem with having a stainless steel stove with everything else white. As far as resell goes, are you planning to stay in your house long term or will you be trying to sell shortly? If you are planning to sell soon, I would try to have everything the same.

my fridge is an ugly yellow. the dishwasher is black and the stove is black and white. No one ever says anything to me that they don't match. I know they don't match. But the fridge was $150 and all we could afford a few years ago. When I replace it I will probably go with black. Not because of the matching just because I really like the look!

Olive oil and WD40 to clean the smudges does the trick. We have 4 kids and 2 dogs and since we started doing this don't have a problem with smudges on the appliances. HGTV actually suggested olive oil but the cheaper option is WD40
