Default Amount spent on pets?

I noticed that quite a few people here have pets. How much do you spend each month on food, vet bills, toys, litterbox sand, etc?

i have 3 dogs ( i live in the country and think they are necessary to protect the house) a piggy and a horse that lives with my mom.

i spend about 40 a month average on my anmials. however, its broke down to wher i only actully spend out 20 a month on them, the other expence is in lump sums 3 x a year. i have to have my horse shoed 3x a year, and vet bills on him are about 40 1x a year. the food is 5 a bag, but i only need one bag every 2 weeks in the summer, and i go thru 2 bags a week in winter plus the hay i get.

i get such enjoyment form my horse tho that i feel his care and cost is worth it. he has a nice barn, my mom takes care of him if i cant, and its nice to know hes there and happy. i dont pay anything for his bording at my folks house.

I bought a 5$ bag of cat food like 2 months ago, but mostly we just give her leftovers, shes not really ours, she's a stray. I have hopes of conning my DH into getting her fixed before spring though, we don't want any little strays.

Sore subject for me. I have spent way too much. Here is the breakdown.

1. Chessie (Yellow lab given to me by someone who could no longer keep him)

$2,000 for a gun shot wound he received 1 week after I owned Hime

2. Patches (My best friend)

$100 Hernia repair
$600 Eye repair after our cat scrathed her in the eye
$250 middle of the night er treatment after she fought some unknown wild animal

3. Christy (the cat)

$100 to declaw her.

4. Pax (part Sherman Shepard dog I no longer own)

$150 for surgery to remove the stick that he sallowed but got caught in his throat.

5. Peepers (My male Boston Terrier who can't mate)

$500 nose surgery so he could breathe
$500 hospital bill because I was late in giving him his parvo shot
$150 butt surgery because his anal gland got abscessed.

During a period of 7 years, I have had 12 cats spayed and neurtered not included in the above. Of course I only have 5 cats now.

In addition, I spend about $50 a month in dog food for the Boston Terriers because they have smelly GI tracts, $10 for Chessie, and about $15 for all the cats and their feline friends who like to visit and eat.

Got rid of the cow last year. She ate $300 a year in hay and about $15.00 a week in grain.

Got rid of the chickens last month. They ate about $7.50 a month.

The horse that we got rid of only ate $150 a year in hay, but I didn't know that, so I had bought $300 worth of hay. I use whats left as mulch. Shouldn't need to buy mulch for a good 5 years. Oh, yeah, I forgt, I also spent $10 a week on grain for senior horses for her.

I give my own shots at $3.50 X6. The Humane Society gives them their rabbies. I think it cost $20 per dog every other year now that they have had 2 shots each.

We had a rabbit, but he died. His food was very cheap. I think we paid $7.50 for a bag 6 months before he died. We still have some left.

The worms are the cheapest pet. We just feed them scraps. Hmmm, maybe I should have just stuck with worms?

Pets aren't overly expensive when they are healthy, but can become very expensive when the get sick or have injuries.
